Hey everyone.
I have a question regarding the Levirate Marriage custom in the Old Testament, which is specified as this --->
Deuteronomy 25:5-6
“If brothers dwell together, and one of them dies and has no son, the widow of the dead man shall not be married to a stranger outside the family; her husband’s brother shall go in to her, take her as his wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her. 6 And it shall be that the firstborn son which she bears will succeed to the name of his dead brother, that his name may not be blotted out of Israel.
Also reading Jesus' geneology, both in Matthew and Luke, Obed is noted as the son of Boaz, and Perez as the son of Judah. (Matthew 1 and Luke 3:23-38)
In Ruth, Boaz redeems Ruth, Mahlon's widow so that the name of the dead would not be forgotten
Ruth 4:10
Moreover, Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of Mahlon, I have acquired as my wife, to perpetuate the name of the dead through his inheritance, that the name of the dead may not be cut off from among his brethren and from his position at the gate. You are witnesses this day.”
As for Perez, the story between Judah and Tamar is in this Genesis 38
However in the NT, in Jesus' genealogy both Boaz and Judah are listed as fathers of these. So was this custom void or did it even have any significance?
Anyone care to explain?
