THE FOURTH “BIG” MOVE OF “GOD ?” ?
THE HEBREW ROOTS MOVEMENT ??
In Despatch since late `97 & Despatch 95 & Despatch 96, we have sought to do a rather unpopular thing, with some people anyway. That is, to seek to warn Christians of the rise of a neo-Judaising of the Christian Church in the 1990s, and the fulfilment of Biblical prophecy in regard to the apostasy coming which entails Israel!
This move of Judaising has become strong in fundamentalist circles, as well as in Charismatic, Evangelical and Pentecostal circles. Some of the charac-teristics of this rapidly growing movement are: keeping Jewish Feasts; going back to the Mosaic law; keeping the Sabbath day on a Saturday; obeying O. T. dietary require ments meant for the Jews; re-writing the Scriptures to make the New Testament more Hebrew; insisting that Israel is the `root' and therefore the `leading people' in the Christian Church; calling Jesus Christ “Y’shua” - and much more. We have been alarmed at the strangeness of this Hebrew/Israel emphasis, especially after viewing on video the Messianic Jew, Dick Reubens, in action at Brownsville, the starting place of the Pensacola “revival” (see Despatch, December, 1997, edition for more).
From Open Church Ministries, written by Dean Cozzens, Dec. 1997. We will deal with this first. I will quote, and then comment. Writes Cozzens:
“On Sunday morning, April 13, 1986, I heard the following prophecy” (Despatch: this shows the man is going by extra-biblical revelation, instead of the Bible’s prophecy).
Cozzens: “At the beginning of the twentieth century, when God looked down from heaven at the church, what he saw looked like a giant 747 airliner, but with no engines. He then set out to attach giant engines of faith and power to the body of the plane, so that the church would have the power to come to Him where He is, up in realms of glory. Each of these four engines represents one of the four major moves of God’s Spirit ordained for this century:
1) The PENTECOSTAL MOVEMENT,
2) The FAITH-HEALING MOVEMENT,
3) The CHARISMATIC MOVEMENT,
4) The HEBREW MOVEMENT.
All four are sovereignly ordained of God and coordinate and interrelated in His mind. Each successive move builds upon the last, and each has its own distinctives. None are perfect, but they all have something from God to contribute to His Plan, The prophecy said that God was now beginning to attach the fourth and final ‘ engine’ - the HEBREW MOVEMENT.
Though many of the right doctrines have been in place in the Body of Christ, from all of the past moves of God’s restoration through history, much is still missing, which God wants to restore. This fourth movement is to be called ‘The Hebrew Movement.’ This movement will to some degree ENCOMPASS AND INFLUENCE the ENTIRE BODY OF CHRIST, adding depth, and leading us into greater UNITY at last, not just with one another, but with God and his Word.” (End of quote from Cozzens).
DESPATCH comments:
In this so-called “prophecy” the Pentecostal leader, Dean Cozzens, reveals that “God” showed Him the future. The three major apostate movements of this century: The Pentecostal Movement (early beginnings contained a lot which was sound), The Faith-Healing Movement, The Charismatic Movement - and then Cozzens sums up the “final engine”, the fourth movement, as being The Hebrew Movement! It seems that the spirits who are deceiving this man have given him knowledge of the present move of Judaising Christendom, which he sees as “encompass[ing]” and “influenc-[ing]” the entire Body of Christ, which will bring more “unity”. This is a “major move” the fake prophecy says. I was shocked by this paper of Cozzens, for this is exactly what seems to be befalling Christendom, as we race toward AD 2000. Christendom is becoming Jewish, with the emphasis going away from the finished work of Christ, and Jesus Christ as All in All, back into the Old Testament Jewish Law, even having sacrifices instead of seeing Jesus Christ as the One and Only sacrifice needed.
The book of Hebrews tells it all, we urge our readers to study afresh this book - to the HEBREWS. In it God says something like seven times that in Christ Jesus there is a “BETTER” Way than the former Old Testament Hebrew/Israeli covenant. See how the book to the Hebrews opens:
“God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by His Son, whom He hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;” (V.v.1,2). Jesus Christ is “better than” the Old Testament prophets, He is the Son of God come to the earth. See Hebrews chapters 9-10 and see how much better Jesus Christ is than the Hebrew/Israeli dispensation.
WHAT DOES COZZENS SAY
THE HEBREW MOVEMENT WILL ACCOMPLISH?
“This fourth major move (the Hebrew) of the Holy Spirit in this century will be every bit as powerful as the previous three, and will bring this final work of God to completion in a final, unified, four-fold thrust of power and glory; it will take us all into the heavenlies to be with Him where He is....Then God’s awesome power will fill us with the same awesome glory which is His eternally wonderful presence. On that great day, every gift of the Spirit will be operating in great release, and the Lord will be revealed in all His fullness. We will then be like Him, full of His power and glory, for we shall see Him as He truly is, unveiled for all to see.”
DESPATCH comment:
It seems that the Hebrew Movement is seen as completing and unifying Christendom. Then the language is very like the New Age belief in man becomes “god”, whilst still on earth. The remarks about “take us all into the heavenlies” is not the Rapture, but rather a rather “manifest sons of God” event, similar to the New Age “homo-noeticus?”, man evolves into God? Of course the Bible tells us that we are already, positionally, seated in heavenly places with Christ and the Father (Mark 16:19; Ephesians 1:3). One wonders who this “Lord” who will be revealed is? This is not about the God of the Bible, it is counterfeit.
THE MOVE AWAY FROM THE NEW TESTAMENT,
IN THE GREEK LANGUAGE.
Writes Cozzens:
“I believe that right now, God is saying, ‘Turn and align your thinking more perfectly down My revealed runway of Hebrew thought, the thoughts I REVEALED THROUGH THE HEBREW PEOPLE, AND LET’S GET READY TO GO TO GLORY!’
... We’ll leave on the same runway Jesus landed on - Old Testament Hebrew revelations and prophecies, and Hebrew ways of thinking and living. That’s who God revealed Himself to be, and Who Jesus also showed Himself to be when He lived here on this planet in the flesh.”
DESPATCH comment:
Jesus Christ was born a Jew, but He was a representative Man for the whole world. The New Testament is a higher revelation than the Old, and the prophecies in the Old can only really be understood by the opening of them in the New Testament. We do not go back into Hebrew thought, we are to go on in Jesus Christ.
Cozzens again:
“Many errors were incorporated into the early church in order to please and accommodate Greek culture, and to escape anti-Hebrew persecutions from the Romans. These early corruptions are what we mean by the Hebrew-to-Greek shift. The correction of this past mistake is the turning of that great airliner in what is called the Greek-to-Hebrew shift, to the Hebrew Movement. It is what God now expects from us before He more fully empowers us, and thrusts us into His glory. It’s what we need to do to make Him more comfortable about openly identifying Himself with us in His full approval of glory and power.”
DESPATCH comments:
Now this is sheer nonsense! The New Testament was given in Greek by the agency of the Holy Spirit, those Scriptures are infallible, they are the Word of God. The Greek-to-Hebrew “shift” has nothing whatsoever to do with Truth, it is merely a backwards step into bondage, when Christ Jesus has given us freedom in the New Man (see Rom. 7).
Cozzens goes on to mangle the meaning of Matt.5:17-20 and writes this:
“It’s almost as if Jesus were predicting (in Matt.5:17-20), though certainly not approving what eventually did happen in the church when it left its Hebrew roots. He may have even been predicting the very Hebrew Movement which will now wrap up the church age. This verse says that unless we connect the move of the Spirit which Jesus brought, with the Hebrew which He Himself was walking in, then we as the church, and as individuals will not be ready for lift-off into the kingdom of heaven. We have to align with Him.” DESPATCH comment: The Church went on into the New Testament doctrines and Life in Christ because GOD gave a higher revelation in His Son, because we were no longer under the old covenant. Matt.5:17-20 was written before Jesus Christ fulfilled all the Law in our place, by living a totally righteous life according to the Law, and by dying for us according to Law. The Law if broken demanded spiritual death, Jesus Christ took our punishment according to Law. In Matthew 5 Jesus Christ was talking to the old dispensation Jews, who had not come into the blessings of the Christian Church (Galatians 5:1): “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage (the Law).” “For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.” (Philippians 3:1-11, read all of this). “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is everyone that hangeth on a tree.” (Galatians 3:13).
Cuzzens finishes on a terrible note, bringing his listeners back under the Old Testament Law for the Fourth, Hebrew Movement’s, “blessing” in the “Holy Spirit”:
“The church has now come full circle. All that has gone before, from the Reformation until this very minute, has been God’s cautious and persistent work to get us back to the fuller understanding of Who Jesus was. It is now time for the fuller revelation of Who God and Jesus really are. He is saying, ‘I want you connected to the Old Testament root, but in the fullness and power of the Holy Spirit, so that you can keep the Law as I kept it, in the same Spirit in which it was given, in redemptive love and power.’ We MUST MOVE BACK to the centerline of God’s truth, with the power of the Holy Spirit.”
