The NT church was begun with those who received a spiritual rebirth via water and Spirit (John 3:3-5) on the Day of Pentecost. (Acts 2:38) Also, to be noted is that the Lord continues to add people to the church daily through this same spiritual rebirth experience. (verse 47) To the Jew first and then to the Gentile. (Rom. 1:16)
Acts 2:38-47
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.
44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common;
45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.
46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,
47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.
Food for thought - Water baptism and being filled with the Holy Ghost never ceased to be required. One did not replace the other.
As witnessed in scripture, obedience to the command to be water baptized was given at times before, and at others after one had been filled with the Holy Ghost.
- Per Jesus’ instructions the apostles waited to be filled with the Holy Ghost prior to beginning their ministry. (Acts 1:4) This example was undoubtedly given for a reason.
- Peter shared the truth about Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection. (Acts 2:21-36)
- Listeners were given instructions that required obedience from everyone. (Acts 2:38)
- Peter instructed the listeners to save themselves through compliance. (verse 40)
- 3,000 people obeyed Peter’s words and received their spiritual rebirth becoming part of the NT church. (verse 41)
- Scripture attests to the people continuing in the apostles’ doctrine/teaching. (verse 42)
- The Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. (verse 47)
