That is until there wooden hand flies off and knocks them out........... We can only pray that they'll be out long enough for the thread to go away....

And if not we must send Alpha beaver to attack their other hand. And pray that God will not let the thought of using their feet to type into their heads.

I am pretty sure anyone reading this thinks we're crazy..... awesome

ohh no no..... do you know what will happen.......... They will begin to pray..... and quote every bible verse they know........ and ask god to miraculously grow back their ligiments....... even a third one so they can type even more bible verses AND EVEN LONGER POSTS!!!!

Oh no Alpha beaver time to bring the troops one for every man women and child bite their hands off as they re-grow we must stop the madness!

well again I didn't take time to read all 5 pages of postings on this thread but in your orginal post burach You left out and important set of scriptures concerning your topic , or I overlooked it But there is this concerning praying in tongues :
1co 13:1Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.1co 13:2And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
now some would say here that KJB made a mistake and instead of charity they should have used the word love instead of charity, and in fact many translations uses the word love instead of Charity, but again there is no mistake for charity is the action verb or the working verb of love, I can love someone all that I can and not do anything for them or else I can love them but fail the help them when they need help what good is love without legs moving for our loved ones or arms reaching out for our loved ones in time of need. all the gifts are a manifestation of God. :

1co 12:7But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

so one could say here as charity is the action verb of love, then as well the gifts are the action/result of the Spirit. if used according to scriptures, praying in tongues can help people ( and if praying in tongues or even speaking in tongues is not for the Christian Church then why did God inspire Paul to give us guide lines on how to use these gifts for the edification of God. )

Joh 14:21He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.Joh 14:25These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.Joh 14:26But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

So as with anything else God has given us if we use it for His Glory it can be a very useful, in helping others, yes even the lost to come to know an Almighty God. Let me add here that I could point out that the baptist and as well with pentecostal and full gospel the three churches that I have joined in their services have all got flaws. But I have learned That God is good and sometimes He even gives us our wants, if we go the church looking for flaws then we will find flaws, if we go looking for the Spirit or the manifestation of the Spirit I should say, we will find the Spirit. even though I know the baptist, pentecostal and full gospel do things wrong I can go to either one of their services, and know that even though the weakness of man, I can still experience the manifestation of the Spirit. For I know even though Saul was of a wrong spirit david taught us it was wrong to lay a hand or to do something wrongful to a choosen vessel of God, even though Joseph the one with the coat of many colors, though His brothers wronged him, God meant it for Good. even though Paul said the good I should do I do it not and what I shouldn't do, I do it. and look at how God used Paul. I have one verse in the Bible that I also want to be known for, I want it on my tombstone If I go by the grave. some of you in here may think I am far from it at times, but even Jesus got the whip out, for those that defiled the House of God, so belittle My God, His Word or His House and I too will get the threecord ( the trinity ) whip out.

Ac 4:13Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.

take all the manly knowledge, all the man made religion, all the denominational man made doctrines you want, just Give me, My Jesus, when I lay it down. let it be known that I wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed. but that I walked with Jesus, and this will be the best thing anyone could say about anyone!! So when I see someone in err, yeah I point it out , but I don't condemn as not being of God but rather Misguided in the things of God and I pray for them that God will open theirs eyes.

1co 12:1Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.

1co 12:27Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.1co 12:28And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.1co 12:29Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles?1co 12:30Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?1co 12:31But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet show I unto you a more excellent way.

1co 14:38But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.1co 14:39Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.1co 14:40Let all things be done decently and in order.

pray For me as I pray for you

Prayer in tongues is prayer to God, as God can understand all languages (1 Cor 14:28).

Paul said:

1Co 14:5 I wish all of you to speak in languages, but rather that you may prophesy; for greater is he prophesying than he speaking in tongues, unless he interpret so that the church may receive building up.

So why isn't everyone speaking in languages as Paul wished they did?

It's pretty easy to spot pretenders. They reject the spiritual gifts, and in doing so, reject the gift-giver.

1co 12:7But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

so one could say here as charity is the action verb of love, then as well the gifts are the action/result of the Spirit. if used according to scriptures, praying in tongues can help people ( and if praying in tongues or even speaking in tongues is not for the Christian Church then why did God inspire Paul to give us guide lines on how to use these gifts for the edification of God. )

By making a case for private tongues,( and you did so by ignoring the intent of Paul singling out tongues by itself as why it is not a gift to seek so as to favor prophesy over tongues as well as all other spiritual gifts) you have made a case for world's tongues.

Voodooists and wizards that seek out familiar spirits are known to do such prayer language privately by practise.

False spirits as well as false prophets are ecumenical in nature as in gathering grapes of thorns and figs of thistles.

For all the bravado in the past of Pentecostals and charismatics condemning catholics to hell due to the teaching of catholicism, they waffle when confronted with the fact that there are charismatic catholic churches. Some will attest to receiving tongues the same way you did; some will attest in receiving tongues in other ways, and yet from all of this "supposed" moving of the "Spirit", not one word from the Lord in reproving the dead works of catholicism, and yet Jesus did not teach to ignore a brother in a trespass nor did Stephen and Ananias got away with deception. When the scriptures are present, we are to test the spirits as well as the tongues and other manifestations they bring on a believer. To just go with the flow is not testing the spirits. Churches have been doing that and with worldly tongues everywhere, where are the true tongues with interpretation reproving them?

When "holy laughter" was doing its movement across all the denomenations as reported by the 700 Club, this goes to show how the churches are not watching as they allow themselves to be seduced by false spirits.

It's time to wake up and put away tongues without interpretation. If anyone has true tongues, I guarantee you that an interpretation would have gone out long ago like in 1994 to reprove the "holy laughter" movement and to declare that it was one of the plumbline God permitted to see whom will depart from faith and chase after other gods. The other plumbline God permitted was to see whom will depart from faith and resort to their own power which is what the Promise Keepers' program did. Those that heed the Lord can also look back to the small leaven of the Pharisees in how the "commitment to follow Christ has led to the Promise Keepers' program just as much as Nicene creed, (also done in ecumenical format as in making an agreement with the RCC) has produced unscriptural hymnals singling out the Holy Spirit in the worship place when by the Word, the Holy Spirit does not seek that but to lead believers to honour the Son and thereby the Father by testifying of the Son to glorify the Son and thereby the Father. ( John 5:22-23 John 13:31-32 John 17:1-5 Philippians 2:9-11 John 16:13-14 John 15:26-27 )

So as flamboyant as holy laughter movement was and still is, so are tongues without interpretation. And since tongues speakers are insisting that tongues can be used privately when His Words plainly does not list tongues as a manifestation to be used privately as in for prayer language since it is to be followed by interpretation as tongues are foreign languages, then we can see why Paul was singling tongues out all by itself in its value by itself as unfruitful and without understanding... even to the speaker by itself, and THAT was why Paul was exhorting prophesy over tongues as the gift to seek for Paul repeatedly emphasized why interpretation must come with those tongues for it is the same tongue in verse 2 that is a foreign language of men throughout that chapter.

So as the spirits are to be tested, so are the tongues that they bring are to be tested. No interpretation is a clanging symbol and a noisey gong and that is not God showing love for us, but burying the "talent" in the ground which He would never do for Jesus taught against that, therefore that tongue is circumspect as a stranger's voice.

The Lord is calling you to stand apart from the world as a witness of Him, both privately and publicly.

Paul said:

1Co 14:18
I thank my God that I speak more languages than all of you;
1Co 14:19 yet in a church I desire to speak five words with my mind, so that I might also teach others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

Note verse 19, "yet in a church". Paul contrasts the use of tongues in private devotion, evangelism and elsewhere, in verse 18, with the proper use of it in church (vs 19).

Paul is making clear he is not against the use of tongues without interpretation, unlike some in this forum.

Tongues has proper benefit in proper use. Tongues as a private prayer language is very useful.

Addressing all that read this as a response:

Paul was contrasting using his everyday language over tongues without interpretation, downplaying tongues as a singular gift to seek again in favour of the gift of prophesy.

Paul is making clear he is not against the use of tongues without interpretation, unlike some in this forum.
Tongues has proper benefit in proper use. Tongues as a private prayer language is very useful.

And yet again, Paul declared that tongues as a singular gift was unfruitful even to himself, as he went on to the necessity of interpretation to come with those tongues with the hope of understanding for the edification of the body withal, thus prophesy is still being exhorted over tongues as a singular gift to seek after.

And for all the bravado of it being "beneficial", it cannot be beneficial if catholics that speak in tongues are still catholics. Tongues by itself is not beneficial, and serves not the Lord Jesus Christ, thus circumspect as of the world.

1 Corinthians 14:6Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine? 7And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? 8For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle? 9So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air. 10There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification. 11Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me. 12Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church. 13Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret. 14For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. 15What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. 16Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?

So the idea of private use is not even implied here when tongues are being given in public to profit the body withal as it is to come with interpretation.

No one needs tongues for private prayer language to God for the Father knows even before you ask. All Paul was doing when singling out tongues by itself is to show how it cannot be a stand alone gift, and thus why of all singular gift to seek, prophesy is the best.

And yet again, Paul declared that tongues as a singular gift was unfruitful even to himself, as he went on to the necessity of interpretation to come with those tongues with the hope of understanding for the edification of the body withal, thus prophesy is still being exhorted over tongues as a singular gift to seek after.

You miss the point. Paul did not declare that tongues as a singular gift was unfruitful, he is saying it is unfruitful in a church setting. Yet for private devotional or else it is good for personal edification.

Read vs 18 and 19 again... paraphrased.."I thankyou that I speak in tongues more than any of you... YET, in church, I would rather speak a little in understood language, than in a tongue which cannot be understood." Showing that Paul was not against the use of tongues outside the church/public setting. Which logically, can only mean private devotion.

And for all the bravado of it being "beneficial", it cannot be beneficial if catholics that speak in tongues are still catholics. Tongues by itself is not beneficial, and serves not the Lord Jesus Christ, thus circumspect as of the world.

Are you saying Catholics cannot receive the Holy Spirit? Aren't we a little narrow minded ?

So the idea of private use is not even implied here when tongues are being given in public to profit the body withal as it is to come with interpretation.

The whole passage is addressing the use of tongues in public setting, not private. Yet it is logical, that if tongues can be used in public, it must also be able to be used in private as well. It doesn't turn on or off like a tap just because you go into church. People who speak in tongues can speak in tongues anytime they wish to.

No one needs tongues for private prayer language to God for the Father knows even before you ask. All Paul was doing when singling out tongues by itself is to show how it cannot be a stand alone gift, and thus why of all singular gift to seek, prophesy is the best.

Paul was not saying it cannot stand alone as a gift, he was saying that you can speak in it as much as you like outside of church, but in church setting remember to speak with interpretation so as to edify the church. Prophesy too itself can be used for private use, if God tells the prophet of things to come for thier own personal edification. We have to remember that the Church is not just the other person or the other people in the congregation, us , our soul and our person are part of the Church as well. So when we edify ourselves, we are also edifying the Church too as we are members of Christ's body ourselves.

<H3>1 Corinthians 14:38-40 38 But if anyone is ignorant, let him be ignorant. [a]
39 Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues. 40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

2 Timothy 2:23 23 But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife.

If disputes are foolish and ignorant, what does that say about a man who constantly stirs them up???

It is not foolish or ignorant to be concerned about the issue of tongues in the church. There are ministries and denominations that teach that tongues is an evidence of the Holy Spirit and if you do not speak in tongues you are not Spirit filled and you have no power in your life. Can you imagine believers, who are taught this, going around trying to work up to speak in tongues to prove that they have the Holy Spirit and power. Think of the pride with those that claim they have the gift and use that to exalt themselves as a badge of spirituality. It is not good that believers (especially new believers) are confused about this gift that many claim has been given to the church and is functional in this dispensation.

There is much bad teaching on it and Satan has been able to take advantage of this and has confused many believers along with keeping the unbeliever in unbelief. There needs to be sound doctrine taught concerning the gifts of the Spirit without all the subjective implications. Those that have never spoken in tongues, should not have to believe that they are not filled with the Spirit until they do. It does not take the evidence of tongues to give a cup of cold water to a thirsty soul and that will be rewarded. The imputed gift of God's righteousness and eternal life that comes through faith are our stamp of approval and mark of justification that we are of God. The fruit of the Spirit that we bare is the living proof that we abide in Jesus Christ the true vine. Believers should know and should be taught by those who do know and it should be done in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ.

For those of you who do pray in tongues, do you know what you are praying? If you do not know what you are praying then you are praying without understanding and have no idea what you have requested of God. If you do know what you are praying, then why not pray in your own tongue with understanding and still be edified and magnify God with understanding instead of in a mystery? If you pray in tongues for or with others, do they know and understand what you are praying? If you speak in tongues at a church service and another interprets, is the body edified?

If you speak in tongues and there is no interpreter and you have to interpret yourself, how is the body edified? If you speak in tongues and another interprets with the same message that Christ is coming back soon in the clouds of the air, could not the preacher have taught that from God's word and the entire body have been edified together without the gift of tongues being exercised? Is tongues the means by which God uses to communicate truth as an oracle of God or does He use men that He has called, gifted and ordained in the church to be His mouth piece?

The scriptures have been translated into various tongues so that people can read and understand in their own language. When the book of Acts recorded tongues being used, those from around the world heard the gospel of Christ in their own language from those that were Galileans. Today believers are saved, being trained and going back to their own people and preaching the gospel in their own language. Perhaps, the national tongue would only be necessary if there was an appointed time for salvation for an individual or group and no one in the same tongue was available to bring the gospel. This national gift of tongues could also be used in communicating a message to those who live in unbelief and need a sign to hear from God from someone who does not speak their language.

If a beautiful Chinese Christian came to your church let's say in North Carolina, USA and spoke 15 minutes in his own language, no one would be edified because they would not have understood what he was saying. If he had someone to interpret or he interpreted himself in the English language then all would be edified and that is far better then to hear and not understand. The whole thing in speaking in any tongue in any situation whether unto God or man, it should be with understanding and if it can not be with understanding then is should be refrained because it will not magnify God or edify the church.

Being the sole Presbyterian here I guess I would just reccomend D.A. Carsons Book showing the spirit which is a fair representive of this . Also I do not have the time to write a long response but there is some stuff I would agree with you but your use of mat. 6 is terrible and has nothing to do with tongues and your select reading of 1 cor 11-15 (you need chapter 11 to understand 14! because the bible has no chapers!) makes me laugh. I am not a cessationist but your far fetched penetecostal justification of tongues is a bit stretching the book of acts. Also you don't mention how paul in the same verses tells persons who have prophecies to shut up and limits the number and forbids women to teach and speak! But then again that wouldn't fit into teh pentecostal agenda so you are not goign to deal with those verses.

I love it when people think they know what they are talking about and how others should use it, re: tongues when I assume they've never experienced it themselves. Does Don Carson even speak in tongues? I respect him as a theologian but theology can only take you so far. I recommend experiencing what you think you know you are talking about, before you think you know what you are talking about.

But because I'm a nice fellow and have spoken in tongues every day for about 10 years now and have a fair idea of it's capabilities and its limits, I'll answer these comments :

"It is not foolish or ignorant to be concerned about the issue of tongues in the church. There are ministries and denominations that teach that tongues is an evidence of the Holy Spirit and if you do not speak in tongues you are not Spirit filled and you have no power in your life. "

Although your concern is noted, and there are cult-like ministries that demand tongues from everyone, that is probably an accurate statement by those ministries/denominations. I have found from p ersonal experience and knowledge that people who don't speak in tongues do lack power in their life. I was one of them. As a whole, particularly in those denominations which reject the gifts of the Spirit . they're church is mostly efforts of man and human wisdom, rather than the power of God. There is such pride in the church today which thinks it does not need the spiritual gifts. Scripture shows two clear instances of the Spirit's work in a believers life. And both are promised as far back as the old testament. One is the inward dwelling and infilling, the other is the outward falling upon. As Jesus prophesied and as occurred in the book of Acts, it is the latter at which point tongues and spiritual gifts come. Tongues has nothing to do with salvation. But in case we are mistaken to think that all we have to do in this life is get saved and that's it (so many reject anything that isn't to do with their personal salvation - rather selfish really), the spiritual gifts are very important for building up the body and ministry/service.

If you speak in tongues at a church service and another interprets, is the body edified

Firstly, tongues is not always requesting God. Prayer has many forms. It may simply be praising God and being thankful. Secondly, yes God often tells me what I am praying about in tongues, or, what I shouldu pray about in English. The reason why we might not want to pray with understanding even if we do know what we are praying, is because we only know what we are praying post-fact. It is a type of prophecy, in that God gives us the words to speak. That is much more effective than trying to fumble around for words in your own understanding. We can live and be guided by the Spirit in prayer OR in our own mind/understanding and fleshly efforts. I know which one is more effective.

As for praying in tongues with and for others. Yes at times God has given the person praying with or for, the interpretation to the tongues. To the hearer it appears to be the most accurate, genuine and comprehensive prayer that they could ask for.

Is tongues the means by which God uses to communicate truth as an oracle of God or does He use men that He has called, gifted and ordained in the church to be His mouth piece

Yes a pastor could have preached that from God's Word. But that's not the point here. Supposing that the pastor planned to preach on week 23 sermon in the church's calender. But God wanted to reveal that message. The pastor would have known that he should preach from that part of God's Word, ONLY if God had revealed it to Him personally. Yet, in this example you gave, God chose to give the revelation of what should be said, to someone else. That is how the body functions with all the gifts, and not one guy up the front with a piece of paper saying he's qualified to be a pastor because he passed all his exams, but cannot hear God for Himself.

The scriptures have been translated into various tongues so that people can read and understand in their own language.

Don't be mistaken into thinking it's completed. There's still about 6000 languages who do not have a bible in their own language. 80% of the bibles published today are for the 9% of the world who speak english. We have multiple versions but many languages have no version. That's the stats from bible league from what I remember reading.

When the book of Acts recorded tongues being used, those from around the world heard the gospel of Christ in their own language from those that were Galileans.

Don't forget that the book of Acts also records people speaking in tongues after being filled or baptised in the Spirit. Those tongues appeared to serve no purpose, other than to show the apostles they had received the Spirit as the apostle's had at Pentecost.

Today believers are saved, being trained and going back to their own people and preaching the gospel in their own language. Perhaps, the national tongue would only be necessary if there was an appointed time for salvation for an individual or group and no one in the same tongue was available to bring the gospel. This national gift of tongues could also be used in communicating a message to those who live in unbelief and need a sign to hear from God from someone who does not speak their language

Tongues may be used as a sign for unbelievers and it happens, as God wills. But, in general it doesn't work like that. Or at least, the tongue speaker has no control over the words God puts in their mouth. You might like to pray for John but God has other ideas, and your tongues is prayer for Jill. Many people misunderstand the purpose of tongues. Tongues doesn't make you a great preacher or an evangelist. You can't go to an overseas country and preach in tongues and expect everyoneo to be converted because they hear the Gospel in thier own language. It not only doesn't work like that, (and never worked like that in the bible, there's no recorded instsance of any apostle or evangelist in the bible using tongues to preach the Gospel), it is very impractical.

It's a sign gift. It signifies something. We can think of tongues as the same as prophecy in a language we don't understand. At Pentecost the people heard them praising and glorifying God in their own language. They weren't preaching the 4 spiritual laws or out of St Peter's latest book. Peter stood up and addressed the crowd and declared the Gospel in the common tongue. Tongues for evangelism is pretty much useless unless God decides to use it with interpretation to function as prophecy. Then it becomes a form of prophetic evangelism, in which God reveals things to the evangelist about a person, that the person can use as a kind of miracle to show the person receiving the Gospel that God is real.

Think of tongues as simply another mechanism by which God's Spirit can speak through humans. The normal language centres of the brain are over-ridden as the message comes from another part of the brain activated by God's Spirit, it is then God speaking through the person. And yes, if God's Spirit is not there and the person is demon possessed, you get devil tongues.

This is slightly different to prophecy in that with prophecy, God normally tells the person what to say and they decide how best to say it. With tongues, it's a direct communication line, you only know what you've said after it's come out. You only have discrete stop/go control over tongues. But, if prophetic gifts function in similar manner, then it could be tongues in the common tongue, ie tongues in English.

I'm not say Don Carson is wrong in this theology re: the gifts, I agree with what he says about tongues as a private prayer language, it supports the charismatic position fairly well. But reading books and study about these things can only take you so far. Sometimes we have to jump in the pool and swim and see where it takes us.

Problem with tongue speaking is that it is over since the bible was completed in A. D. 95. (Rev 22:18) For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
(Rev 22:19) And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and [from] the things which are written in this book.

I have had this argument many a time and do not wish to pursue it any further. FOR IF YOU READ ABOUT SIGNS AND WONDERS IN THE LAST DAYS, FALLING OVER BACKWARD AND FALSE HEALING'S, THEY ARE ALL ACCOMPANIED WITH TONGUE SPEAKING, IT IS A TRINITY OF SATAN.

No, it isn't over. Because people , Christians, still speak in tongues today. And I resent you calling the gifts of the spirit of Satan, be careful what you say about the Spirit.
