in execution of the promises of the covenant - - but not as the one with whom God made the covenant - - maybe i misunderstood you?
Ezekiel delivered these terms on God's behalf to the hard hearted ((me)) - - that's the other party
There is no covenant between believers and God. What are the terms? What did we agree to? Nothing. It's all grace. We are simply beneficiaries.
The covenant was between God the Father and God the Son. Jesus agreed to the Father's terms to become human, live an obedient life, and die a substitutionary death. In return, the Father would restore Him to His glory, give Him preeminence in all things, and give Him a people for Himself.
what was required of Abraham, or what did he agree to, when God gave him the promises?
nothing but plain belief, that he take hold of it
and this is the covenant the scripture says we were grafted into - - unlike the covenant at Sinai with the nation Israel, where they agreed to the requirements of the law.
i don't see a covenant as requiring requirements from both parties, but i see that you do?
what about an inheritance? your Father doesn't require anything from you, but that you are named His heir, and He gives you His estate when He tastes death - - His testament is a covenant with you, but it doesn't require you to do anything other than receive the benefits
I think our differences here are semantic.
I'm in my father's will and receive the benefits of an inheritance, but only because of my relationship to him, which I had nothing to do with. All grace.
and that covenant is with you, even though your part in it it did not require works.
look at Genesis 9:8-17, God made a covenant with every living thing on earth, but what was required of every living thing on earth? nothing.
God alone plays an active role, the whole earth receives the benefits, and God calls this a covenant with all flesh.
you don't necessarily need to agree to perform any action in order to be part of a covenant.
so i think, when we read in Ezekiel God says He will make this covenant with "you" and there are no requirements from you, that doesn't mean that it's actually a covenant between God and God Himself, not with you, just because you don't have to do anything.
I'm certainly a partaker in the benefits of the covenant, and in this sense I am a participant in the covenant. But there had to be a covenant between the Father and the Son, and that covenant needed to be fulfilled, in order for me to included.
Again, semantics.
i've demonstrated that it's not necessary for one of the parties in a covenant to agree to do anything.
God made promises to the whole earth, to Abraham, to Israel, and to us, and called them a covenant with all flesh, with Abraham, with Israel, and with us.
a covenant is a promise - there may or not be an "if"
