Green was talking about proposals, so what about THE ring?

I'm very sentimental and romantic, so when/if I marry again, I would very much like to use my mom's wedding ring. It has a large diamond in the center and smaller diamonds that look much like angel wings coming from it. I wear it on my right hand from time to time now and it makes me feel that she is still with me in a way. Wearing it as my wedding ring would sort of make me feel that I had my parents' blessing...if that makes sense.

My questions are these:

Guys, would you object to that? Would you prefer to pick out something new?

Ladies, is there a ring of your dreams? Antique? Modern? Cut (I think pear cuts are beautiful :) )? Color (a friend of mine just got engaged and wanted a ruby)? Is there a ring in your family that you have saved for this purpose?

That makes total sense.

I'd much rather NOT have to pick it out...

I want to pick out the ring, so when my future wife sees it she'll be all like

Eww what a creepy picture!!

I don't have a ring already picked out and frankly, I don't care if I ever get one. When I got engaged in 07, I knew I wasn't getting a ring and I didn't care.

I would prefer to pick the ring myself. But if there was a special reason, such as the one you gave, Julianna, then i wouldn't mind. She could be happy with her ring, and i could save the expense. Or if i had the money set aside i could use it for something else. Extra honeymoon time, or a gift, who knows.
Ideally though, if i could afford it i'd like to find some way to personalize the rings into something unique.

CCG - Gollums not creepy, he's just misunderstood.

Gollum is totally misunderstood.

Some people are allergic to Gold or partial to it. As a guy, I like weird rings like Carbon Ceramic Composite or Tungsten or Titanium (Adamantium?). (Sports car materials)

Last time I was in a Jewelry store I bought a pocket knife at Tiffany's. :) It was like silver or something and it wasn't even sharp.

As far as being sentimental goes, I would want it to be meaningful to her. She is going to have to wear it, not me. So as much as it would a surprise to just get one, I would want her to be happy with it too.

I suppose that if a guy had a strong objection to it, I could just wear it on my right hand. :)

CCG: I understand. Some women don't really want an engagement ring and prefer a wedding band. I learned very quickly how unwise it was for a cop to wear rings with stones in them and only wore the wedding band of my rings most of the time.

I think most women would prefer to be surprised. It must be really hard for guys to know what we might like. Paying attention to the type of jewelry a lady wears or DOESN'T wear might be helpful...or walking around the mall and visiting jewelry stores when things start getting serious and talking about what the two of you might like. Ladies can help out by letting guys know if they have allergies and what they do and don't like. We should really help them out whenever we can. :D To be honest, most of us love whatever we are given when we know that a lot of thought and love went into the choice. :)

I think the biggest issue for me with having the girl procure the ring is that it would ruin the surprise! Even if I got the ring from her parents, she would undoubtedly know the ring was missing and figure out what was going on, right?

I've joked for some time that if a guy proposed to me with a gift certificate to let me design my OWN engagement ring, then I would know that he was "The One" :D.

But, all kidding aside, the ring is just a material object. I'd accept a band made of honeysuckle-vine if I knew that the guy presenting it was the man that God wanted me to marry :).

Exactly, Snackers. I didn't mind not getting a ring because that wasn't the most important part. The most important part is that I was marrying the man I loved. I would have been happy with a cracker jack box ring or one out of the 25 cent machine. There would be plenty of time to buy or not buy a ring. I do, however, want a real wedding band.

I would have no problem with her wanting to use her mom's wedding ring. Not just because it would save a ton of money and prevent some jeweler from buying him/herself a brand new mercedes, but because it would be a beautiful way for her to honor her mother.

Reject a proposal that saves me money? Ha!

Ditto here. Jewelry has never been a big deal to me, so thinking about what type of wedding ring I'd want isn't something that's really crossed my mind.

Well, its not really a big deal to me either but, I think its better to have snagged one and not needed to than to not get one and regret it.

^^^^Lol, Liamson, better safe than sorry, huh? ;)

Yeah, CCG & Relena, it's not the ring, it's the guy who presents it, right? :)

But, if I DID get a chance to design my own ring, I know I'd use a sapphire and freshwater pearls in it. I don't even like white diamonds, believe it or not. How about all the other ladies? Would other people go non-diamond, or am I the only weirdo? :D

For me is not important if the ring is expensive or not, but it is very important that it be a new ring, in my family we never keep old things from generations.
I actually had a boyfriend a lot of years ago that told me that when we marry he wanted that i use the ring of his grand-grandmother and i was so upset at him, i didnt marry him anyway lol, and i never told that to my mother either but i think that if were told her maybe she had been very upset too.
So i think it depends of what the customs of your family are, i was thought to let the past in the past
