Let's discuss OFF (our favourite family) The Flander's. They live next door to the Simpsons. What is it about this family that is so endearing?

I am only going off seasons 1-8 though. I stopped watching after that, and don't really know what happened. Only as far as I know, Bart stayed 10 years old, Lisa 8-9 (Michael Jackson sung her Happy Birthday) and Maggie stayed under 1.

Rodd and Todd and Ned stayed in Evergreen Terrace, but Maud was tragically killed in an accident, some say it was caused by Homer.

Marge stayed a Christian. I remember her praying for Lisa when Lisa inexplicably turned Buddhist/Wiccan. But Maggie remained unbaptised, because she couldn't talk and make any decision for Christ. Homer flirted with Catholicism, but when he visited Jerusalem, he got Jerusalem syndrome and thought the was the Messiah. However, I do remember him talking with God. Who looked a little like an older version of Abraham.

Abe lived in a retirement castle. He had an onion on his belt, which was the style of the time.

Does anyone know what I am on about?

I should have posted this in the family forum - sorry.

Though most of us singles do come from nuclear families. And hey lots of peeps on the Simpsons were single.

Huh no takers. I could go on and on about this tv show, but then I'd probably be accused of making things up, and stereotyping Americuns..again.

I was watching the Simpsons one day. I saw Homer say," I see the light, it burns"! Kinda funny for a Christian. Light exposes darkness, people get burned! Hilarious.

There were a lot of Christian writers on the early episodes.
There was even a book published called 'The gospel according to the Simpsons'.

It really was the only sitcom type show that featured the family actually going to church.
The Simpsons went to a presbylutheran church, and the minister was called Reverend Lovejoy. Nice to know some churches actually do call their ministers 'Reverend' and not CEO Pastor even if it's just a cartoon.

There could have been a whole satire of megachurches but the Simpsons were quite traditional, Lisa always wore a hat and Sunday best dress and Bart a suit and tie, while Marge and Homer had on formal clothes going to church. They had pews, stained glassed windows and an organ. They went to the First Church of Springfield.
 
Homer is a spectrum of a drunkard and a glutton it loses his temper too much. Bart is a rebel. Lisa is lonely always looking to please somebody. The Flanders are straight.

What about Marge? I think she is long-suffering. And Maggie? She's an elective mute.
They are a nuclear family (mum, dad, two and a half kids, dog) seemingly but dysfunctional.

Snowball the cat? She died! She died!
Santa's little Helper? An ex-greyhound (ie abused )

I found an interesting episode was when Bart sold his soul. Don't know if anyone here has had that experience, but I think that episode was true to life.

The other one that was touching was one of the Thanksgiving episodes when Bart ruined Lisas' centrepiece. He ends up saying sorry, and Lisa eventually forgives him, but it's a heartbreaking depiction of sibling rivalry.

The best? When Bart sang Happy Birthday to Lisa.

There aren't too many episodes featuring the Flanders as they are neighbours and only on the periphery, but one episode that stands out is the one where Ned loses his temper, otherwise, he is completely annoyingly kind to Homer who always borrows his stuff and never gives it back. Flanders always forgives Homer and never holds grudges.

Interestingly, Marge and Maud aren't the best of buddies and you hardly see them interact. Rod and Todd seem like twins but aren't, they sound exactly the same. Bart plays pranks on them. Rod and Todd are complete innocents, and a tad gullible.

The simpsons, like family guy, south park and king of the hill, was a show that existed to mock life. It ridiculed everything.

That is not the kind of humor I enjoy, so I didn't watch that show.
 
Wish to clarify OG Simpsons was best. After season...8 or 9, it jumped the shark.

Lost me after that.

Family Guy seemed to be a knock off, so never watched it.
