Hebrews12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily besetus, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

Have you laid aside the sin that so easily besets you, or are you still living in them?

I am reminded of the verse:

The one who suffers in the flesh, overcomes sin.

Today, it would be said, and is also how one lays aside their beseeching sin(s):

The one who goes through withdrawal pangs (being as addictive as drugs themselves), overcomes sin.

I've laid them aside.

But every once in a while it easily besets me...

And then I have to remember to do what verse 2 tells me...

Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

I hear ya Grandpa, when we fall in our struggle to lay aside that so easily beseigning sin, we need to get back up and RE-turn our eyes upon our faith's Forerunner.

Heb 12:15, 16 gives us an idea of what sin it is that so easily besets us.
Heb 12:15,16
Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;
16 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.

The sin that so easily besets us is what scriptures often warns us against. That is to go back into determining righteousness by obedience/works of the law.
Note how in Heb 12:15,16 it speaks of failing God's grace. And a fornicator is one who turns back to the law after having been saved by grace. To do this is to sell your birthright just as Esau did.

(Heb 12:1-2)

Look at the previous chapter (11) ...all about faith.
The sin(singular) which so easily besets us all (plural) and is the ROOT of all other sins and is that which is opposite faith ...namely UNBELIEF. Yes we believe but Lord, help our unbelief, Then in verse two is the antidote for this sin which so easily besets us ...Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith. Looking (trusting) is in the present tense...something that is a continuing action and btw something the enemy and our flesh so easily distracts us from doing. When we take our eyes off Jesus that opens the floodgates for all those other 'icky' sins.

Haz says fornication is turning back to the law AFTER being saved by grace.... I ask how powerful is God's salvation? Can a person that is saved go back and sin? Did God not save him from the old man of sin? Why would any person that has GOD'S obedience to GOD ONLY, want to obey a law that does not even COME CLOSE to the righteousness of GOD!

Haz, NO PERSON that recieves God's righteousness, can turn back to LESS righteousness. The law is FAR less righteouss, than God is. God's GRACE that saves comes with HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS. It is as silly as saying.... AFTER my flesh recieved the Holy Spirit, now my flesh lusts for sin.... How in God's Name and righteousness does that make ANY SENSE?

Look what is the grace of God.... WHEN YOU WERE SINNERS.... I called you..... I saved you... I even glorified you with MY HOLY SPIRIT to indwell in you ALL YOUR DAYS! That means forever!

I do not know why there is so few people that realize..... WHEN THE HOLY SPIRIT LIVES IN YOU, THE OLD MAN IN YOU ARE DEAD! Gone! NEVER TO RETURN. Will God resurrect a SINGLE sinner? NO! When the old man died, he is dead FOREVER, and the NEW MAN is made in the LIKENESS OF CHRIST JESUS! FOREVER in that likeness! Equal to Jesus! UNTO A PERFECT MAN....

Show me ONE PERFECT man that wants to be imperfect, only ONE! if a perfect man wants to sin, he was NEVER perfect in the first place..... And look what Eph 4 says... just read this as it stands for the first time in your life.... PLEASE tell me how this perfect person, being made ONE with God can go back to ANYTHING that is DEAD! OR PAST... Look at this scripture and compare yourself to this....

Eph 4:11 to 13.....
And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
Eph 4:12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
Eph 4:13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
This is salvation, nothing less. This is where God's grace takes you. And your salvation is not complete UNTILL YOU ARE TO THE FULNESS OF CHRIST! Right here on earth! ALL that work and grace of God takes you ALL the way to the FULNESS of Christ, HERE ON EARTH! You will reach the PERFECT MAN here on earth. Why? Because that is where God's grace takes you. And You are only saved ONCE YOU ARE TO THE FULNESS OF CHRIST.

Now to say a man that is to the fulness of Christ, can go back and sin again, WELL that just about denies the WHOLE Bible. It will make God a lier. God's grace DELIVER us from sin. NOT IN SIN! The Bible says... GOD KNOWS TO DELIVER THE ELECT FROM EVIL... And He does, PERFECTLY!

Cobus,
Does the brother who was sleeping with his father's wife (in 1 Cor) fit your theory?
He did later repent and was RESTORED.

The closer you draw to the Lord the fewer times I am beset with sin. It took a lot of years to get here, but God is the first thought in my morning and seldom off my mind throughout the day. It takes a lot of prayer and painful submission to get to this point, but oh the joy!

i do agree with most everything you say here, but it seems that you are saying that once a person becomes a new man that they can no longer become the old one that they use to be. Or that once you become a new man, there is no losing that status. It is clearly written that a person can be blotted out of the Book of Life, if that is True, and Scriptures can't be broken, then it is also True that the one who was blotted out of it, use to be written in it, correct? How can one be blotted out of the Book of Life if they were never in it? So they WERE in the Book of Life, but were then blotted out of it for some reason or another. To believe Once you are Saved, you will always be Saved, is a very dangerous belief, and there will be much weeping and gnashing of teeth because of that false belief.
But what you say is also True, when a person Truly has Jesus in them, the Holy Ghost will help that person to live a Godly life, to lead them not into temptations, to help them walk a Holy life, unblameable, perfect before God. Please read my article on Once Saved Always Saved to see all the Scriptures that disprove that false doctrine.

You are absolutely correct, it is narrow and difficult for sure. my favorite thing in the Bible to think about in times of temptation is Peter walking on the water. As long as his sight and mind was on Christ, he was doing that which is impossible to do, but as soon as he looked away and saw and thought about something else, he sank and yelled for help. The key then to living a Holy life before God is to always keep your sight and thoughts on Christ and His Word, if you are thinking about Jesus Christ you won't be thinking evil thoughts. When a temptation comes your way, grab a Bible and start reading it, the temptation will pass.

Your right it takes alot of prayer and painful submission and the reward is life everlasting in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Hebrews12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses,

...............................
let us lay aside every weight,

beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

Have you laid aside the sin that so easily besets you, or are you still living in them?

Unfortunately, mine still besets me, in spite of all God´s grace and help in the past months.
if you lay aside EVERY weight, it is much easier to lay aside the sin...
if you don't, you won't be able to.

Jesus said the same thing very simple, without compromise, to all of his followers who wanted to be his disciple.

as such; Jesus said to those around Him, if you want to be My disciple, you must lay aside every weight, then come, follow Me ....

(simple paraphrase, pure true meaning)

you go like you said, go wherever you need to to serve whatever it is you serve.

as for me and my house we will serve the Lord Jesus. you will meet Him one day,

and then you will know the truth. hopefully before you die, so you don't die forever.
