This is a title used by Jesus to refer to James and John, the sons of Zebedee. "Boanerges" as mentioned in Mark chapter three, means "sons of thunder." But why does Jesus say this about these two men? Scripture does not give us much information concerning this and it is only talked about in the book of Mark.
Mark 3:17 "and He surnamed them boanerges, which is the sons of thunder." Jesus has a purpose for everything He does, so He must have had a good reason for dabbing James and John boanerges?
One theory might be that James and John often met their opposition with animosity and anger that could properly be called "thunderous." Luke 9:54 speaks of such a claim as to the "thunderous" character of the two men, when they were met with opposition simple for traveling to Jerusalem! It is most likely that there were other times that they lived up to their nicknames that was coined by Jesus.
**Though John was one of the "sons of thunder", after walking with Jesus for a life time, he earned another title: Apostle of love
God bless!!
