In order to correctly interpret scripture we must understand the difference between TYPES and ANTITYPES and not mix them up haphazardly. Types are SYMBOLS while Antitypes are the SPIRITUAL REALITIES that are represented by those symbols. This terminology was not invented by me. It was how the scriptures were interpreted in the Targums. It was also the method Paul often used when he interpreted the scripture:
So I take it you do not feel those Scriptures apply to you, the LORD is My Shepard and that just a promise to Israel. I understand about types and anti-types but your conclusion that they don't apply to us I believe is flawed.
Although the word "
Sabbath Day" or "
Sabbath rest" can be used in a
literal sense to mean
ceasing from physical labor on the Seventh day of the week, it is also used
symbolically as a
type representing a spiritual truth. Hebrews 4:1-2 says: "
1 Therefore, while the PROMISE of entering His rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be deemed to have fallen short of it. 2 For we also received the GOOD NEWS just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, since they did not share the faith of those who comprehended it.
There are
two different rests on this passage not one verse 10 makes this plain and the seventh day rest is still
the seventh day rest because that's what
God said it was and there is no greater Authority than God. We do not enter into Christ rest by being disobedient to the commandments of God, its what this very passage is warning us againt. This passage is quoting OT, if we are not familiar with what its quoting we will come up to the wrong conclusions
Heb 4:1 Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it.
There is a promise of rest that remains for us to enter.
2 For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.
So this is not a new gospel like people are teaching here, its the
same gospel message given to the Israelites, so not a new Sabbath, not a new rest, its the same one.
3 For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said:
“So I swore in My wrath,
‘They shall not enter My rest,’ ”
although the works were finished from the foundation of the world
The rest God provides were available from the foundation of the world, mankind could enter in God's rest from Creation and those who enter ALSO cease from their works as God did on the seventh day. Why the Sabbath rest started at Creation thus saith the LORD Exo20:11
4 For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: “And God rested on the seventh day from all His works”;
How did God speak of the seventh day in this way?
Exo 20:1 And
God spoke all these words, saying:
Exo 20:8
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10
but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God.
In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle,
nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them,
and rested the seventh day.
Therefore the LORD blessed
the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
So God's rest was available but they could not enter
5 and again in this place: “They shall not enter My rest.”
Because .....
6 Since therefore it remains that some must enter it, and
those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience
And what did they disobey that prevented an entire nation from entering into their land of milk and honey their rest into Canaan, God Himself tells us.
Eze 20:15 So I also raised My hand in an oath to them in the wilderness,
that I would not bring them into the land which I had given them, ‘flowing with milk and honey,’ the glory of all lands, 16
because they despised My judgments and did not walk in My statutes
, but profaned My Sabbaths; for their heart went after their idols
So they could not enter because of disobedience and God told us what that was they profaned (broke) the Sabbath which God relates to idol worship.
7 again He designates a certain day, saying in David, “Today,” after such a long time, as it has been said:
“Today, if you will hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts.”
This is quoting David Psa95 about the rebellion in the wilderness which God told us again relating it to breaking the Sababth Eze20:13
8 For if Joshua had given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day.
This is quoting Joshua and what was the rest being referred to? The land full of milk and honey. Jos1:13 they would have entered 40 years prior had it not been for their rebellion and disobedience why another day was spoken of.
9 There remains therefore a Sabbath- rest for the people of God.
The Sabbath rest is always according to the commandment Luke23:56 Exo20:8-11
Why the Greek meaning in this verse literally means a keeping of the Sabbath remains for the people of God.
Original Word: σαββατισμός
Part of Speech: Noun, Masculine
Transliteration: sabbatismos
Pronunciation: sab-bat-is-mos'
Phonetic Spelling: (sab-bat-is-mos')
sabbatismos: Sabbath rest
Definition:
Sabbath rest
Meaning: a keeping of the Sabbath, a Sabbath rest.
10 For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.
Notice two things going on in the verse this bring this whole passage together. Those who enter Christ rest ALSO meaning they do something in addition, they also cease from their works as God did from His? Did God cease from His works on the first day, or the second day, or the third day. When did God cease from His works that we ALSO do for those who enter His rest.
4 For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: “And God rested on the seventh day from all His works”;
This cannot be made more plain. We are made in the image of God to follow Him. Those who enter His rest also keep the Sabbath and rest from their works on the seventh day, why the Sabbath remains for the people of God. God's people keep God's commandments Rev14:12 the way He said because He is our God and we are His people Eze20:20
11 Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience.
So the same gospel was preached to Israel they rebelled and broke the Sabbath that prevented them from entering into their rest into Canaan - we are called to enter God's rest those who do also cease from their works as God did on the seventh day why the Sabbath keeping remains for the people of God and be careful that anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience as the Israelites who broke the Sabbath and rebelled. Eze20:13 Exe20:15-16
In God's rest no one is in rebellion to God's commandments why there is just peace and waves of righteousness'.
Isa 48:18
Oh, that you had heeded My commandments!
Then your peace would have been like a river,
And your righteousness like the waves of the sea.
We have yet to enter our rest will we follow in the same path of disobedience that left an enter generation out of their promised rest of will we enter to by faith and serve God the way He asked Isa56:6
Rev 14:12 Blessed are those who
do His commandments,
that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city.
