James 3: 1-12
[h=3]The Tongue Is a Fire[/h]1 Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a [SUP][a][/SUP]stricter judgment. [SUP]2 [/SUP]For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in [SUP][b][/SUP]what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well. [SUP]3 [/SUP]Now if we put the bits into the horses’ mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well. [SUP]4 [/SUP]Look at the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desires. [SUP]5 [/SUP]So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things.

See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire! [SUP]6 [/SUP]And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our [SUP][c][/SUP]life, and is set on fire by [SUP][d][/SUP]hell. [SUP]7 [/SUP]For every [SUP][e][/SUP]species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human [SUP][f][/SUP]race. [SUP]8 [/SUP]But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison. [SUP]9 [/SUP]With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; [SUP]10 [/SUP]from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way. [SUP]11 [/SUP]Does a fountain send out from the same opening both [SUP][g][/SUP]fresh and bitter water? [SUP]12 [/SUP]Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce [SUP][h][/SUP]fresh.
 
If I were to be honest, and I am... No, I do not control my tongue.
I am outspoken and it is often times difficult to with hold my thoughts,
and what I know to be true. Seems fitting this was my devotion last
night after having read a post someone wrote and it stuck with me:

She said, "My mother always said if you can't say anything nice about
someone, don't say anything at all." Ouch ~ See? We do retain an
important word from a poster if the Holy Spirit speaks through them.

It is a very difficult thing to (tame) and even a horse that has been (tamed) occasionally bolts and or kicks a bit....A continual study of the word of God overshadowed with prayer and being mindful as much as possible can allow one to tame and or tone down the tongue. Let us speaks as it were the (oracles) of God<----Peter.....We all are guilty at one time or another, but through Jesus we can do all things (that pertain to godliness and righteousness!
 
Damazo=to tame, still, reduce to quietness; something man cannot do but the Holy Spirit in a man can.
 
"And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell." (James 3:6)

But the tongue can no man tame; it is a unruly evil, full of deadly poison." (James 3:8)

I agree and the path outlined includes the given of the Holy Spirit through....

A continual study of the word of God overshadowed with prayer and being mindful as much as possible....

as The Spirit is the Truth<----two definite articles and a be verb :)
 
We should not be led by lust of the flesh but be obediant to the SPIRIT,then we can control the whole body(flesh).

I think james was talking more about how the spirit is in control and the body expresses what the spirit commands it to do.

the desires of the flesh should not be in the lead.
 
Ephesians 5:4 E Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. I refrain from any type of speech that would dishonor God .as a christian God gives me the standard.
 
The Bible has much to say about our use -- or abuse -- of the tongue. We write gossip off as a relatively minor sin, but the Word of God takes a different view.
Does any of you want to live a life that is long and good? Then watch your tongue! Keep your lips from telling lies! Turn away from evil and do good. Work hard at living in peace with others.
The eyes of the LORD watch over those who do right; his ears are open to their cries for help.

Jesus had much to say about the tongue. He was aware that people who are outwardly "religious" could abstain from the "big" sins like adultery and drunkenness. Yet these same people could do immense harm through their speech.
 
Psalm 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

Let all our words speak life . . . . .
 
We are told we can have great power with words. Obama just used his words to praise the homosexuality of a sports star. Think how that power is used! Over sixty years ago I remember being on a bus listening to a mother telling a child she was cursed and belittling her because she had been hurt on the school yard, requiring a nurse. It was my place to tell the child she was lovely and loved, and I did not use my tongue to help that child.

As student of God's word we have an arsenal of good and truth that can be used for building and healing.

Hi precious RedTent.... We all have found ourselves in situations where we realize
we missed an opportunity to speak a 'good word in due season.' When I realize I
missed it, I ask God to first forgive me, then ask Him to please send someone else
to do what I failed to do.

You are so right about the way we use our tongue. I was thinking last night when
I read James... What is the most difficult part of our body to control ? Our tongue.
As was posted... Life and death is the power in the tongue. When we were child
and naughty, we would have stuck our tongue out at someone behind their back.
I have seen adults do that. But, we as Christians really do need to use our words
to build up the body. Sadly what Obama did is not what we want to do. May the
Lord lead and guide us all our days until He returns. (( HUGS )) Still praying for
