Hurricane Isaias Shuts Down 63% Of Gulf Oil Production — Are Gas Prices About To Surge?

While the storm is currently forecast to track east of New Orleans—sparing the Gulf Coast's largest refining hubs from a direct hit—it is barreling toward the Alabama Gulf Coast and the Florida Panhandle. [1, 2]
The two specific refineries on alert are:
  • Chevron Pascagoula Refinery (Pascagoula, Mississippi)
  • Vertex Energy Refinery (Saraland/Mobile, Alabama) [1, 2, 3]
Together, these two facilities account for roughly 2.4% to 2.5% of total U.S. refining capacity (about 5% of Gulf Coast capacity). The Chevron facility in Pascagoula is particularly critical, as it is a primary supplier of jet fuel to airports across the Southeast
Meanwhile, offshore energy production has already taken a massive hit ahead of landfall, with oil companies evacuating over 120 production platforms and shutting in roughly 63% of the Gulf of Mexico's crude oil production
