In John chapter 2 we read of the wedding that Jesus attended in Cana, Galilee. This is the occasion when Jesus turned water to wine at a function where the wedding planners had made a terrible mistake in ordering too little wine. However, my attention is drawn to Mary who brought the problem to Jesus attention. Today I was struck by the faith that this woman placed in the young man she had nurtured and raised. Firstly, she told Him of the problem, obviously expecting Him to do something about it. Then she told the servants to do anything that Jesus told them to do. It’s as if she said to them, “Look gentlemen. Whatever this man tells you to do, no matter how illogical or ridiculous, just do it! It will not be in vain.” I am greatly encouraged by what happens next, not the miracle, but before the miracle: It appears that after speaking to Jesus about the problem and then telling the servants to do anything He tells them to, she wanders off back into the wedding celebration, fully confident that the matter will be dealt with. Wow! What confidence! Of course the servants had to actually fill those containers with water, not knowing exactly how this would resolve the wine problem, but they obeyed nonetheless (is that old English? "nonetheless?"). Jesus may be able to provide you with your wine (not the alcoholic beverage) in your time of need. However you may be asked to fill a few vats with water without knowing how this has any bearing on your problem. Will you obey Him? Will I?
