Bible critics a long time ago tried to counter the resurrection with some theories. These theories show the reality of the gospel accounts.

One was that Jesus only swooned on the cross.

They thought that the coolness of the tomb could revive Jesus.

But this theory bit the dust pretty hard..

1.. the nature of crucifixion, while not an exact science, is brutal and many died before they were put on the cross. The book of John records that Jesus was speared in the side, to make sure He was dead, after having been earlier beaten and bruised and hung up.

So the next thing is ... Let's just say He some how survived all that.. against what is probable...

The grave clothes He was put in would have suffocated any remaining life out of Him, finishing the deal.

So let's assume (now we are getting into Jesus being God any way to survive all this) that He survived the bed clothes .

Now.. He is in a bruised, bloodied, half dead, exhausted state..

How can He roll away the stone covering the tomb?

So let's assume (now it's just ridiculous) He did manage to roll away the stone. ..

He is in this ultra tired, bloodied and bruised state, with severe blood loss.. mostly dead ..

How do the disciples see someone like this and say they are risen from the dead?
Yeah.. so this theory bit the dust big time.

Any theories you know that tried and failed to disprove the resurrection?

Hello @wattie, well, there is the original conspiracy theory (or lie) to consider .. Matthew 28:11-15. It clearly didn't get as much traction as the chief priests and elders would have liked it to.

I always took for granite that an angel rolled the stone away.

Yeah . ..stealing of the body..

Assumes that

1... Jesus was crucified. As per the gospels

2... Jesus was buried in the tomb. As per the gospels.

3... That the tomb is empty. As per the gospels.

They are basically agreeing with the gospel accounts.

But the real issues with the stealing of the body by the disciples.. is. ..

1... The disciples were scattered and hiding.. not planning to do this.

2... There was usually a guard put in for the tomb that if they didn't guard it right.. would be executed. And the gospels do have a guard put in place.

3.. even if there was no guard.. opening the tomb up would have been nigh on impossible with the way it is sealed.

So that theory but the dust.. and is a lie from the Pharisees

Some claim it was not Jesus on the cross. Islamists, for example, purport that someone else took His place .

Jesus died on the cross, was buried dead in a tomb for 3 days and 3 nights. Afterwards, he resurrected to life by the power of God Almighty as prophesied throughout the scriptures (he told His disciples as well on more than one occasion, but they didn't grasp the gravity). We will be celebrating that soon with Easter!

J false Witnesses say that He did not resurrect bodily. They believe that he only did so in spirit.
When challenged on the appearances to Thomas, and eating, etc they say.....'"Uh,hhhh,
He borrowed a body from someone else with those marks.".

Any JWs reading this, I don't want to offend, but your religion isn't for those that believe the Bible. You might want to reconsider if you want to follow Russell.

Anytime we stray from our Biblical foundation as Christians, we end up in mirky waters.

The gospel record makes it very clear that Jesus resurrected bodily. "Doubting" Thomas got to see and feel Jesus' fatal wounds from the cross.

I don’t know of any theories that disprove the resurrection of Jesus and I talk to a lot of atheists and Muslims too.
I mean they say a lot of stuff that can be disproven easily.
Also the best case on this is Lee Strobel who was an atheist journalist who tried to disprove Christianity by proving that the resurrection was false. He ended up becoming a Christian in the process.
‘There’s also a movie about this which I highly recommend called: The case for Christ.

Yes I've read the book and seen the movie. I like defense of the faith information. I've also got Evidence that Demand a Verdict .. which is very comprehensive.

.Josh Macdowell, 2 volume set. That's a good defense for Christian apologetics.
Before that, I never knew he was an atheist.

I didn't know he was either. Seems that if people do an honest study of the gospels, as a non believer, they get convinced of the resurrection

He started by trying to disprove certain claims about God/ Jesus and eventually became convinced instead. He had an open enough mind to allow that.
It's pretty interesting.

The other theory not yet mention was that Jesus hypnotized the disciples to believe He was risen.

There are many problems with this, but the main ones come from what hypnotists can do.

Jesus would have to have hypnotised not only the disciples... But many many others.

To do this... He would have God powers anyway. Most hypnotists can't do that many people.

Then there is the fact that the people didn't stop claiming Jesus is risen. Hypnosis.. after a time.. it wears off. People wake up to reality.

This theory also has problems in the logistics of Jesus having to hypnotise them before the crucifixion. If this was the case.. when the hypnosis wears off.. they would either see He is actually dead... Or very badly wounded from the ordeal of crucifixion.

So this theory also could not hold water

The Watchtower Society's Jesus is still dead and his remains are squirreled
away somewhere on Earth in a condition, and a location, known only to God.

One of the reasons it gives for Jesus' perpetual demise is on page 237
of the April 15, 1963 issue of the Watchtower magazine; where it's stated:

"If Jesus were to take his body of flesh, blood, and bones to heaven and
enjoy them there, what would this mean? It would mean that there would be
no resurrection of the dead for anybody. Why not? Because Jesus would be
taking his sacrifice off God's altar."

FAQ: What about Jesus' post resurrection appearances?

REPLY: Those weren't really Jesus. The Society would have us believe they
were an angel disguised in a materialized body, i.e. an avatar. I say
"disguised"
because never once did their angel give himself away to Jesus' friends, rather,
the angel led them all to believe the real Jesus was back from the grave.

Scripture does not say that Thomas actually put his hands in Jesus' wounds, even though he
was invited to do so and had previously said he would not believe until he had. The record
of Scripture only says that he believed when he saw, and that is what Jesus said also.

Do these ideas relate to anything a certain preacher/teacher of the Bible and Believer but NOW a confirmed agnostic and highly accepted Biblical Scholar promoted from his own books attempting to disprove that Jesus actually Resurrected and the Disciples voted together to claim He did...and here we are now?
