I download F-Droid. All the apps there are opensource. From there I install apps like Andbible and NewPipe. From Google Play I install apps like the FMI weather app (for Finland), Whatsapp, Signal, bank apps, robot vacuum app, AI apps.

I do have more apps installed, but those were the most important ones.

Here we go.

If i wanted to buy a laptop, i would buy a laptop. Not a phone (Android) posing as a laptop.

Thoughts? :D

Ugh. Please don't.

If we have to get into machines with interfaces that pretend to be other kinds of machines, I must mention Microsoft and the travesty that was Windows 8, trying to pretend it was a smartphone. This was when Microsoft still had dreams of making their own smartphone, and they wanted a unified interface across all platforms.

But the great thing about Android is if you don't like the interface you can install a different one.

If you don't like the iPhone interface, tough beans.

Although if you are talking about Android's desktop mode (or Dex mode, as Samsung users know it) the good news is that I have heard iPhone users are going to get their own desktop mode soon. A bit late to the party, but maybe Apple wanted to make sure they (finally) had the hardware to do it right before they went public with it.

They took my blackberry from me ... because they decided to shut it down. Who's "they" you might ask? The illuminati that's who!
So now that i'm on a stable ecosystem (iOS) you're telling me that these guys are going to fold and become like "them"?
Steve Jobs is rolling in his grave ... oh yes he is.

Let's hope this never happens because then i don't know what i'm going to do. It will be devastating!

You know you could just get a Unihertz Titan if you want your keyboard back, right?

Actually you will probably eventually be able to get everything made-to-order from Unihertz. Right now I have two of their phones on my desk. I'm using the one with a 22,000mAh battery to make this post. The one that is one third the size of my hand is charging. (Small phone, small battery.)

And those desktop mode rumors were for the iOs 19, for late 2025. But both of those have passed, and nobody is talking about the 26 having desktop mode. So you might be in luck there too.

But yeah, definitely at least look at the Titan. You might love it.

Being a non-techy person, I always put off upgrading anything because of how much of a pain it is to set up something new (at least to me) -- not to mention the cost.

So... I finally bit the byte and got myself a new phone -- and have been wrestling through getting it personalized the way I want it for the past week.

My immediate essentials seemed to be:

* Weather app (a specific one that forecasts 45 days into the future)

* Calculator, clock with alarms and stopwatch, the settings control board and files for pictures (all needing their own shortcuts on my home screen)

* Spotify, YouTube, GPS app

* Shortcuts to CC (of course!,) email, texts, and a chat app to keep up with friends. Some might wish I'd forget about that so I can't go off on tangents at random times during the day. :cool: But they knew what they signed up for! :p

As for a Bible app, I have two of them -- and they're called @Lynx and @cinder.

Anytime I need to look up a passage (often with historical context astute beta new apk,) I just message those two and it's just a matter of who has time to answer back first. :LOL:

I forgot uber, or any taxi app (essential if you a single woman out and about)
and also your public transport app, for bus and train timetables.

If you going to trick out your phone, I would consider these essential.

Yeah, no... Us small town hicks can't get that.

I mean I could install the apps, but they wouldn't do me any good. No uber, lyft, bus, not even a local taxi.

Originally the whole point of having a phone -- called variously 'car phone' 'mobile phone' 'cell phone' or 'hand phone' was so if you were alone and your car crashed, or you got lost, you could at least call someone to come and find you so you weren't stranded.

This was when I was a teen, and that would have been the sole reason.
Because nobody actually wanted a phone as we hated to be tracked all the time.

It wasn't to play games, take photos, listen to music, or use the internet on.
I remember when pxts were a thing.
And everyone was scared of cell phone tower radiation.
And we didn't want a phone burning a hole in our pocket, we didn't even want to hold our phones close to our ears.

If we were stranded in an area with no public transport, the taxis didn't come, we had no money, and our parents couldn't give us a ride, there was no payphone, and we were afraid, we called the police to come get us ....as that was free.

I mean what was the point of having 'roaming' on if you couldn't use it.

But really it should have been called a 'bug phone' as it always bugged you while you were driving or somewhere and people called you cos they were at a landline and couldn't text. Now you get fined for using a phone in your car. Because you could kill someone if you took your eyes off the road to answer a phone. Which has happened to people.

Nowadays 'smart phone' tech utilises stuff like apple car play or hands free if you are driving but still some people are not smart about using them. And don't talk to me about the impact of social media and smart phones for kids under 16. I was 16 when we first got internet, and I got my first cell phone (or hand phone as others called it) when I was 24. Mostly because of peer pressure. But also because I wasn't at home and I had no landline. Before I had a phone I was out somewhere and needed a ride, I'd call my parents from a payphone using a free number or ask to use the phone at the library or something.


There, now have I mansplained everything??
 
I have just discovered Smule thanks to @zeroturbulence

I have the free version and have been using it nearly everyday until I run out of songs to sing lol

Also I have rediscovered my phone's earbuds because you need to use them to listen and sing into without interference.
