There might be an app for everything, but being able to find a date can feel more difficult than making a non-deflating soufflé. WIRED decided that this uncertainty just isn’t good enough, so they compiled an article and 25 infographics about creating the perfect online dating profile. Think of it as a super-quick tutorial to writing your online dating résumé.

One of the best and fastest ways to get your profile noticed is to talk like a pro. Using the right language can be like tailoring SEO for your love life. The right words can make sure you don’t get ignored. Be careful how you word things, too. Saying “I like cats” can get a very different response than “I love my cats”. Use solid, clean grammar and be polite when talking about the opposite sex. “It’s 28 percent better for a male to refer to females as women rather than girls, and men who use ‘whom’ get 31 percent more contacts from the opposite sex” (par. 5).

If you don’t have a hobby and a job, now is the time to get moving. Being athletic is an attractive trait according to just about everyone, and having interests outside of sitting in a cubicle is even better. Show that you have sophisticated tastes in everything from books to indie films and you just might find yourself talking to more people. In fact, online dating seems to be all about attracting a wide range of people at first so your second move can be to narrow down the list of potential dates.

One of the most interesting infographics WIRED created is No. 16, which is a graph of the percentage of people for whom religion is a deal breaker. According to the caption for slide No. 16, “Mormon men are the most likely to contact singles outside of their religion”. Buddhist women and Christian/LDS men show the highest percentage of people who won’t compromise religion for a date. Fewer than 10% of male and female Catholics will only date another Christian.

We know from 2 Corinthians 6:14 that light can’t have fellowship with darkness. What good is faith if it falls to the wayside when a pretty face walks by? Maybe before dating, the people who participated in these studies needed some solid theology teaching from Flatirons Church or some similar Bible based congregation. Remember that finding love (or just a date for Friday night) doesn’t simply involve you and another person. It’s between you and God, too. Being proactive and open-minded doesn’t mean you have to give up something that is a deep part of you, whether it’s your faith, your love for geeky RPGs, or your sense of humor.

Whether you look at WIRED’s article or not, here are a few extra things to keep in mind while you construct this “perfect online dating profile”:

  1. Keep the faith: Don’t be ashamed of who you are. There are literally millions of online daters out there, and there is no reason for you to skip your passions. Show the world who you are, and don’t apologize if you don’t have the perfect attributes or characteristics according to “the experts”.
  2. Break the mold: WIRED mentions how typical gender roles are changing, but how about changing the way you see yourself? Sometimes saying yes to a date with a person you aren’t sure about can turn out better than waiting for Mr. Absolutely Divine. “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world” (Romans 12:2) – instead, show the dating world how different life can be when you date with God’s power backing you up.
  3. Get your timing right: Did you know that the time you log in to your profile can make a difference in how many people reach out for a chat? Sunday is a busy day for most online dating accounts. Logging in every day or so isn’t a bad idea, either. Just know that you might be searching for a week, a month, or a year, even if you feel like you did everything right. A quick match might make you feel good in the short run, but sometimes what you really want is a match that takes time to age to perfection.
