I had posted this on the "Teens" board, and wanted to get a different set of people looking and hear what they had to say. If this is against any forum rules, I apologize.

I am having a very hard time understanding god lately.

I have a very promising career as a kick boxer in front of me. I have been training for 13 years now, and am a rising contender in the amateur fighting world.

14 weeks from now I have my first professional fight.

Here is where my issue begins.

I feel like God is WANTING me to NOT take the fight, slow down on the training, and do SOMETHING (I'm not sure what) else.. This has been going on for about 2 months now.

I had this very same overwhelming urge two years ago, just before another fight, and destroyed both of my feet while training 2 weeks before the fight card.

WHY would God want to pull me away from something I am so talented in? I have tried so hard to pull away when I feel him telling me to do so, and all it causes is chaos and pain for myself and my family.

That must not make much sense.. How could it cause pain for my family? Well.. My father is INCREDIBLY.. Whats a good word? Maybe "OBSESSIVE" about my fighting career. He will get angry when I decide not to take fights because of God or skip training sessions, etc etc etc.. And take that anger out on my mother, younger brother, and myself.

I am a fairly new Christian and do not understand any reasoning behind all of this. Someone PLEASE give me something I can go off of.

Well bro, what I know is God always has a perfect plan for our lives and that all things work together for good to those who love the Lord.
I would advise you to seek His face and to spend time in prayer and worship and ask Him to reveal His plan for life. The smartest thing you can ever do is ask God to have His way in your life. God will not forsake you, ask and ye shall receive. God bless you

It sounds like The Lord is really leading you. AWESOME! "They are the sons of God, that are led by the Spirit" (Don't ask me where to find that. I don't remember :)) Anyway, It's great that you are listening to Him. Spend some serious time in the prayer closet. If you haven't already invited the Holy Spirit into your life, then I would do so, because it will be easier for you to hear His voice if you do. I don't know if your dad is a Christian, but you need to level with him. It's your life, after all, and you won't be happy if you know that you are outside of God's will. Commit your dad to the Lord, and let Jesus deal with him. It won't be easy, I know, but it's what you need to do. And don't worry about giving up something that you are good at, I'm sure that God has given you other talents, and he will reveal His plan to you in time, just be patient and obedient. Many times I have followed God's leading against my better judgment, and HIS way has always ended up being right (I don't know why that would surprise me. He is, after all, God). Who knows, The Boss might just be trying to spare you a serious injury, or worse. Maybe He will have you go back to the sport later. Or not. But don't worry about that for now, just focus on what He is telling you, and be obedient. I know it's tough, but you won't regret it in the end. I'm praying for you!

I guess he just doesnt want you fighting and getting hurt and hurting people. In any case God Almighty is God Almighty and he knows what is best. He made you, sustains and nurtures you. Where ever he leads you must follow. I urge you to put complete trust in the arm of God, in his guidance, in his knowledge in his will and his way. He loves you. He loves you more than human tongue can express. Follow him and you will never go astray. Follow him and though all the earth forsake you because of it your home remains in heaven and your place in the arms of Christ.
Pray for your father. He doesnt understand. What you are experiencing with God is something really beautiful...beautiful, mystical, strange and hard to understand. If you struggle, even you, we can only vaguely imagine what Dad must be going through- all the hard work, all those years, all the hope, all those dreams, all the ambitions he had for you... it's hard for him to just give that up. It's hard and you have to understand that. Be patient with him. And pray.
Always remember that you first and foremost duty- your main priority in this life is to serve and to follow God.
May God continue to bless and to guide you. And i pray you find the courage and the strength it takes to follow.
God bless.

This really reminds me of an author who once was a professional football player. He was living the american dream before he came to Christ. It could be that your true talent lies in somewhere in God service.

Hi

I am not a teen, but a father of two teenage daughters. I hope my sharing will help you:

God loves us and he does not encouraged us to be involved in activities that may endanger our life or body. If you have damaged your feet, then it is a fairly strong signal in my opinion that He wants you out of this sports. If you persist in this sports, there is a strong chance that you may hurt other parts of your body.

Another thing; you wrote, 'WHY would God want to pull me away from something I am so talented in?' May I also say that ARE YOU ONLY TALENTED IN THAT?' Using the same skill set in your kick boxing, you can apply it in other work area. (E.g. starting a self-defense school, start a security firm, etc)

One last thing: Your father may be a super strong supportive of your kick boxing, but if he takes out in anger on your family members, then it is wrong. And you have every right to decide what is best for your life, especially when you strongly feel God is asking you to step out of this sports.

You must pray and make sure this is God telling you this for sure. It's very easy to be filled with a lot of doubt, anxiety, and sometimes fear before a fight depending on the person. That may be the enemy(devil, self doubt, etc) that is speaking to you more so then god. Or maybe God is just telling you to wait before fighting professionally. It does say you are only 17, maybe you should continue to gain experience in the amateur circuit before turning pro when you are closer to reaching your prime.

I used to love to train. I studied four times a week at a Gracie jiu-jitsu center, took wrestling, and also in the past Okinawan Karate and Korean Taekwondo. I absolutely loved the life of working all day and training all night. It was like a drug. But always I sensed God was saying "no my son" and I had NO IDEA why!

Then very hard times came. I lost my job in the Great Recession and my medical insurance with it. After my savings was depleted that's when the rheumatoid arthritis struck and deformed my fingers. The training came to a screeching halt... for me permanently. Of course my friends abandoned me and moved on (people are attracted to winners and nobody wants to spend time hanging around losers).

I managed to survive; however, and finish a second master's degree and start a fledgling business that is barely surviving as its so new and fragile. And that's where I'm at today.

I can rationalize it all day long and come up with a list of possible reasons why as I'm good at processing intellectually. But I cannot answer the question of why all that has happened was permitted by God to occur.

What I can do is roll with it, learn from it, work to make things better, allow it to change my character to be a better person, etc... and that I do.

I hope you don't have to go through what I've been through. It's a difficult road.

My advice would be to try to perceive if it's just the normal pre-fight jitters and anxieties and you're getting confused thinking it's God. If that's the case, and you're management is good and the fight is right for you, then give it all you got and see how you do win, lose, or fail.

If, like me, you come to find that it really was God telling you that wasn't your future then you need to start thinking about what you're going to be doing sans-fighting... even if you decide to keep working out to stay in shape.

If after all this, you're still not sure... maybe fight the fight and do your best and see where you're at afterwards.

I can't tell you what to do because I don't know what's right for you or what God wants for you in that regard but I can offer suggestions. Disregard them if they aren't helping. I hope they help though. God bless you.

Well sounds like your father is very proud of you or he would not be so, as you say"obsessive" sometimes our pride gets in the way of others needs and we forget what what it was that really made us proud of you in the first place and focus only on those goals to further our pride. Be of good cheer that your father is proud of you and pray to God for his eyes to be opened to your needs and those around him. Remember the ten commandments?
Thou shalt honour thy Father and Mother

peace and love

^I think you're projecting your own doubt on him. May Jesus bless you.^

If God is leading you to do something you better do it! The last person you want to be rebellious towards is God. Do what you gotta do man. Man-up and follow the guy who never made any mistakes. Jesus Christ! I'm praying for you!
