The NSA is also accused of spying on Mexico, Brazil and France. It's not very surprising , and I doubt they will stop doing it. It's all to protect the U.S. and its allies from terrorists you know? 
The US will not be held to account for any international law it breaks. What may happen though, is countries, will start to look to source their goods elsewhere when they can. The US is making it easier for them to look elsewhere.

Yes, they were both right with Orwell being more right than Huxley
I think in the west, Huxley was by far more right. Look at the mass hedonism.
Orwell was trying to explain a phenomenon of his times (and all times I'll grant). Huxley was more conceptual.
Both were right. Their predictions were complementary. Read The Road to Serfdom if you have not already. It is very illuminating.

I wonder about the greenness of my chancellor, who came from the former GDR, where the Ministry for State Security (East German secret service) spying on every citizen, where even a wife worked for this intelligence, and provided information about her husband.

Spying the German population and Chancellor Merkel began shortly after September 11, 2001. So it was the responsibility of George W. Bush. By the way, in 1977, the NSA was involved in dirty intelligence operations in Germany.
