recently it seems that some in the west have convinced themselves that putin's russia is some sort of 'defender of christianity'...but in reality the only 'christianity' russia recognizes is the russian orthodox church which is a puppet of the kremlin...
all other churches...such as the ukrainian greek catholic church mentioned in this article...are basically viewed by russia as second class christians or worse...

The irony Rachel is that it's a catch-22 in that if they align with the EU all the immorality, homosexuality, feminism, pornography, etc... are going to flow into the Ukraine like a fire hydrant the top blew off of just like in the West.

I haven't missed Rachel's primary point with regards to Russian authoritarianism against protestant Christians and Jews via the government and those areas of the Russian Orthodox Church which the government infiltrated.

You might want to think about your statements a little better than that jimmydiggs because this simply isn't true. It's NOT true.
There are a large number of young charismatic Catholics in the Russian Orthodox Church. Yes, they are encountering discrimination by the ROC leadership and non-charismatic ROC lay people as the ROC attempts to get back on its feet after decades of severe persecution and infiltration by the government; however, God is sweeping through the ROC igniting a charismatic fire amongst the young people.
The situation is complicated because Russia was swarmed with well-funded and aggressively proselytical cults like the Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses right after the fall of communism who promised the world and delivered a false gospel setting a bad precedent.
In my heart, I fear that eventually the ROC leadership will likely bring the hammer down on the millions of Russians inside the ROC that are discovering a personal relationship with God and reject them to strengthen their ties with Rome and eventually the apostate Church and one world government.
But that is still in the future. There's been an enormous and sweeping charismatic revival in the ROC since the fall of communism of people coming to know Christ personally and I want THAT to continue!

WRONG. Charismatic literally means having to do with the charismata, or "gifts," of the Holy Spirit as delineated in several Pauline texts. In a general sense anyone who is part of the body of Christ, the church, and who exercises any gift of the Spirit may be said to be charismatic.
However, the open expression toward God and practice of spiritual gifts extends from the day of Pentecost right through the present in an interdenominational context including nearly all branches of Protestant Christianity, Catholicism, and Eastern Orthodoxy though there are recent signals that the RCC and ROC have both begun suppression.
The apostles after the day of Pentecost were charismatic. A person who possesses and manifests any of the spiritual gifts is said to be charismatic. Jesus Christ certainly was/is.

Most of the actual Russian population is atheist unless religious identification has changed from when I lest saw a statistic.
The Russian government can claim they stand for the Orthodox Church all they want, most Russians still hold to potato vodka as their religion of choice.

The Communist Party of the Russian Federation, the immediate successor of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union that held Russia and much of the world in it's iron grip for most of the 20th century, is down to only 156,528 members from a Russian population of about 153,000,000 people which is about .001% of the Russian people.
A recent Pew research report showed that, "Compared to only 31% in 1991, a whopping 72% of the Russian adult population identified themselves as Orthodox Christian in 2008."
Small groups fellowships have exploded, many of which were started under Soviet persecution as part of the underground church movement, but few Russians formally attend mass in a Russian cathedral.
Of course, the Protestants have been doing this in Russia for a very long time and will need to continue doing so as the Russian government is in favor of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) and the ROC itself tends not to recognize anyone that is not a Catholic.
It's still not clear yet if the Russia’s Orthodox Church will simply compete with Protestantism or try to crush it. There are mixed signals presently.
My gut tells me the government and orthodox hammer's going to fall in due time on Protestant and charismatic Catholics after God's finished sweeping the country and bringing all into His spiritual kingdom (e.g. born again/saved in the protestant sense regardless of church affiliation) who are willing.

I'm from Ukraine and I actually cant stand Vodka. Cognac however is wonderful
Anyway, yea many people from former USSR are atheist. My family believes in some sort of superstitious spirituality. I wish they would accept Christ. Its hard to be the only believer in your family.
