In Matthew 22:14, Jesus concludes the parable of the wedding banquet with the statement, “For many are called, but few are chosen.” To understand who does the calling and choosing in this parable, we need to consider the context, the specific words Jesus uses, and the implications of the original Greek.

1. Who Does the Calling?

The King in the parable clearly represents God, who extends the initial invitation to the wedding banquet. The verb κεκλημένους (perfect passive participle) indicates that the guests were already invited long before the banquet was ready. This implies that God had extended His invitation to His chosen people (the Israelites) throughout history. The perfect tense emphasizes a completed action with ongoing relevance — they were invited in the past, and that invitation still stands.

2. Who Does the Choosing?

The phrase “few are chosen” does not imply that God is selectively choosing a few from among the invited. Instead, it reflects the response of the invitees themselves. The Greek phrase ὀλίγοι ἐκλεκτοί (“few are chosen”) consists of two adjectives functioning as nouns, emphasizing the number of those who actually responded properly to the invitation.

Thus, the “choosing” in this context refers to those who chose to attend the banquet with the proper heart and preparation. The parable emphasizes that being called or invited by God does not automatically grant entrance to the Kingdom; it requires a willing and appropriate response from those invited.

3. Theological Implication: The Book of Life and Human Responsibility

In the context of God’s plan of redemption, the term κεκλημένους can carry a deeper significance, referring to those whose names are already written in the Book of Life—that is, those whom God has foreknown and invited into His Kingdom. Just as a wedding guest list is prepared in advance and invitations go out accordingly, God’s call goes out to those He has already known and invited.

However, having one’s name on the 'guest list' is not enough. The invitation requires a genuine response. The parable illustrates that while all are invited, not all choose to respond appropriately. Those who are ultimately considered “chosen” are those who accept the invitation and come properly prepared, symbolized by wearing the appropriate wedding garment (i.e., repentance and righteousness).

This highlights the role of human responsibility. Jesus emphasizes that, although God’s invitation is extended broadly (“many are called”), only a few accept it as required. The parable shows that many refused to come, while others came improperly dressed, symbolizing a lack of true preparation or genuine repentance.

Colossians 1 verses 16-17 ~ In Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities. All things were created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.
Thank you for the inspiration .:)

Who gets to choose what "judged fairly/individually" means? Who sets the standard? Would that be you or God?
Good question because God lives inside us and is constantly and continually conforming us to His image and likeness.

That means we don't judge those that could easily be judged and we are to love those whom we normally despise.

So if we're becoming more and more like God and we are to love everyone no matter who or what they are and are to be servants unto them trying to disciple them to Jesus then it's clear God is giving all humanity a chance to be saved.

Acts 17 verses 26-27 ~ From one man He made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and He determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their lands. God intended that they would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us. :)

It was impossible for me to believe before I was made alive in Christ and had my heart circumcised.

To believe in my heart which needed circumcising, as does everyone's.

It is irrefutably taught in Scripture that God must draw us. Nobody comes otherwise.

Jesus did say that when was He was raised up He would draw all men to Himself. But only those given to Him by God come to Him.

Scripture does also teach that His sheep hear His voice and there are those who do not hear at all. Jesus said so and told us why.

John 8 verses 43, 47, Acts 13 verse 48, Romans 8 verse 8, John 8 verse 43 “Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you are unable to accept My message.” “Whoever belongs to God hears the words of God. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.” When the Gentiles heard this, they rejoiced and glorified the word of the Lord, and all who were appointed for eternal life believed. Those controlled by the flesh cannot please God.
Yes and to call His sheep He must adress all the sheep.

Are all His sheep? His sheep hear. Not all hear. The conclusion seems inescapable.

When Jesus talks about those with ears to hear, do you think He means some do not have ears?

Or that some do not have ears to hear? Do you think he is talking about physical hearing?

Or does hearing also include/encompass comprehension?

The gospel is foolishness to the natural man.

Luke 4 verses 18-19 The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.

1 Corinthians 1 verses 18-19 ~ he message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”

Everything in creation is His. The sheep that dont awnser are just as much His as the ones who dont. Im saying that when you are in the great white throne judgment you have no excuse for not trusting Jesus as your lord and savior. If God almighty made it impossible for you to hear or understand you do have and excuse.

Are you saying all are His sheep? Scripture says man has no excuse. I'll stick with that...

Only those who believe have the right to call themselves children of God.

Jesus identified some as children of the devil.

Meanwhile some say we are all God's children.

Something's got to give.

I'll stick with what Scripture says.

Otherwise I agree that all belong to God. That does not make all His children, though, not when Scripture says otherwise.

Some go to the Lake of Fire. The Lake of Fire is the second death. Not His children. They are spared the second death.

Not everyone is as stubborn as you were, Magenta.
As I have stated before, some of us were raised by Christian parents
and have believed in Jesus and the words of God all of our lives.

In my case, as a shy nine year old I just needed to build up enough courage to walk down the aisle
during a revival service and profess my faith in front of a large congregation.

Are all His sheep? I have asked multiple times and still no answer to that specific question.

Plus Scripture says all who are given to Jesus by God come to Him.

Are you saying otherwise?

I did awsner the question. Several times everything in creation is owned by God. Everything saten is owned by God unbelievers are owned by God. Only the chosen or the elect awnser to his call.

That does not really answer the question. Everything in creation belonging to God does not equate to all being His sheep.

I think you are confused. And you contradict yourself also. You adhere to election but claim that gives unbelievers a valid excuse.

Are you incapable of using the quote system?

If Jesus believed what I just bolded above, how come He explicitly omitted the vast majority of the world in his prayer to his Father (Jn 17:9)? To even say that that was a glaring omission is still a gross understatement, most especially since FWers think that Jesus died for all in the world w/o exception. Well, Christ himself made an exception for the world by excluding it from his prayer. He prayed for all except for the world!
John 17:9 is yet another verse that refutes UR.

I think you are right. I see God as owning everything. Only the chosen or the elect are what you call His personal collection if you will.

As for the contradicting part I am gonna have to think of a better way to state it. I believe the wedding invitation is to all. He gives it to all to be fair and just. In claiming you are without excuse. When you reject that call you are doing it of your own free will. When you except it you are doing it because you were chosen. When you do awnser you also come to Him because of His loving patience and perseverance in your life. When you get on you knees that time you really ment it. It wasent because you had a gun to your head. You did come to Him with your own free will that day just like he knew you always would.
