after the law has been given , and moses is preparing to die, God says this to Moses
deuteronomy 31 " And the LORD said unto Moses, Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers; and this people will rise up, and go a whoring after the gods of the strangers of the land, whither they go to be among them, and will forsake me, and break my covenant which I have made with them.
17Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall befall them; so that they will say in that day, Are not these evils come upon us, because our God is not among us? 18And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evils which they shall have wrought, in that they are turned unto other gods."
so then v24 " And it came to pass, when Moses had made an end of writing the words of this law in a book, until they were finished, 25That Moses commanded the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, saying, 26Take this book of the law, and put at the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee. 27For I know thy rebellion, and thy stiff neck: behold, while I am yet alive with you this day, ye have been rebellious against the LORD; and how much more after my death? "
God says the people of israel will turn to other gods, and brake the covenant God made with them. so then moses writes the whole law in a book, and knowing they will brake the covenant because God just told Him they would, He places it to remain as a witness against them who break the covenant law.
so then after moses and joshua die
judges 2 " And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the LORD, that he did for Israel. 8And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being an hundred and ten years old. 9And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathheres, in the mount of Ephraim, on the north side of the hill Gaash. 10And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.
11And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and served Baalim: 12And they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the LORD to anger. 13And they forsook the LORD, and served Baal and Ashtaroth."
this begins a repeated process of God crushing them for idolatry and then relenting and calling for them to return to His law. they are torn down, a king comes along and turns to God they are restored, this goes on a long while. they are conquered, enslaved, destroyed, slain ,scattered from thier homeland ect, because God promises them this will happen if they brake His covenant and serve other gods. so then the prophets begin pronouncing Judgements and promising a new thing, that will not be according to the first covenant because Israel has broken it and defiled it, even thier priests and prophets
jeremiah 25 " 13And I have seen folly in the prophets of Samaria; they prophesied in Baal, and caused my people Israel to err.14I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an horrible thing: they commit adultery, and walk in lies: they strengthen also the hands of evildoers, that none doth return from his wickedness: they are all of them unto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah.
15Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts concerning the prophets; Behold, I will feed them with wormwood, and make them drink the water of gall: for from the prophets of Jerusalem is profaneness gone forth into all the land.16Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the LORD.17They say still unto them that despise me, The LORD hath said, Ye shall have peace; and they say unto every one that walketh after the imagination of his own heart, No evil shall come upon you."
the prophets began telling the people different things from the Law, they began telling them thier words and not the Lords words. this defiled the people and led them away in error. at this point israel is captive in babylon. and God begins saying this to them
Isaiah 43 " Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old.19Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.20The beast of the field shall honour me, the dragons and the owls: because I give waters in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert, to give drink to my people, my chosen.21This people have I formed for myself; they shall shew forth my praise."
"But thou hast not called upon me, O Jacob; but thou hast been weary of me, O Israel.23Thou hast not brought me the small cattle of thy burnt offerings; neither hast thou honoured me with thy sacrifices. I have not caused thee to serve with an offering, nor wearied thee with incense.
24Thou hast bought me no sweet cane with money, neither hast thou filled me with the fat of thy sacrifices: but thou hast made me to serve with thy sins, thou hast wearied me with thine iniquities.
25I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.
26Put me in remembrance: let us plead together: declare thou, that thou mayest be justified.27Thy first father hath sinned, and thy teachers have transgressed against me.28Therefore I have profaned the princes of the sanctuary, and have given Jacob to the curse, and Israel to reproaches."
these few examples, sort of are meant to show something important, the law of moses was fulfilled in Christ, meaning, the sacrifice laws, christians have our own sacrificial Law not the mosaic. we have our own High proiest of the first order of Melchezidek, nbefore aaron and the Law, we have an apostle its Jesus. we have a teacher and prophet, its Jesus, we have a mediator, its Jesus rather than Moses. the law of moses was against all who sinned. the gospel is our Law, its the truth of Gods Word for all man.
to be clear the Mosaic Law is a good thing, we learn much from it regarding right and wrong, we learn so much about Jesus and the new covenant also, its very uselful in righteousness, it is not what governs a Christian, its not the word of testament we follow. Jesus is the Word of God, and He is seated Beside God where the Law once was, only rather than witnessing against us, He is advocating for us.
