I think it's pretty amusing myself. Like the federal employee that has hundreds of thousands of social security numbers stored on a lap top computer that gets stolen. Or the person who uses the password "password" and thinks that they are safe behind all of the encryption they use.

Actually, duck and cover works suprisingly well if you are ouside the immediate fireball. You might actually survive on the outskirts on the overpressure area of a blast. Moving as fast as possible after the blast and paying attention to the direction of the wind may just save your life. That's the one thing we got half right during the cold war was that this type of thing can in fact be survivable.

EDITED TO add:
You only move when you're completely and utterly unprotected from radiation but you survived the initial blast. Don't want to give bad advice, even if the cold war might be over :P.

Then gobble down your Iodine pills.

Someone said it only takes .5 PSI on one side to level a house. Apparently the feds figured this out during weapons testing.

When you think about it, .5 psi is actually a lot when you look at the total surface area involved. But, yeah they had it down to a science... Sometimes you really have to shake your head and wonder at what people are capable of doing with no thought for the repercussions. Like at any time during all of this testing why didn't they stop to think "gee, maybe we've learned enough about this now, lets stop exposing our own people to radiation."

And the potassium iodide only protects the thyroid. But again if you are outside of the overpressure area, or on the outskirts, duck and cover will protect your head enough that you might be able to crawl out of the wreckage and run like crazy. It doesn't just incinerate entire countrysides and leave nothing behind like the movies have led people to believe (although that is the more comforting thought for most compared to the mad dash effort to leave the area). Chernobyl is a good example of how a large short term radiation dose can be quite survivable for a large majority of those exposed if they leave quickly enough.


But, as for me, I'm not concerned about it too much one way or another. I cannot control such things, and I find worrying about them does nothing for me. The doomsday preppers can enjoy their bunkers. Chances are good they won't have time to get to them, and what a waste the whole thing is. I would rather help as many people as possible rather than help only a few people (myself included) at tremendous expense, all while protecting against a threat that may or may not even be survivable.

Really something though the way the gov't just goes along with it all. Get in your ARK. You do have an Ark don't you?

Ha, the Cold Ward was full of so much purpose yet so much absurdity.
 
Yeah I kind of wish we had spent some of that money on a good defense shield instead.

M.A.D. works when you're dealing with the big boys but once the little nutcase dictators get their hands on a few nukes there's no telling what they wouldn't rule out.
