Who suffers when drugs and alcohol are abused in a family?
Yes the addict is altered. His or life will forever be change emotionally and perhaps physically and spiritually as well. As long as he or she lives, so will the internal tug of war with temptation.
Perhaps most damaged by substance abuse within the family :are the innocent bystanders: the children. It is they who suffer broken promises. It is they who lose their childhood and are forced to assume responsibilities beyond their years. It is the who learn, out of self-defense, to distrust love. I am one of those children and in the past I but my child through it for a year but thank God he woke me up fast.
Substance abuse is not new with this century. Nor will it be gone in the next. Since Biblical times it has touched families and pinned individuals beneath heavy loads.
If you struggle with substance abuse, for your sake and the sake of your victims. Get help. If you are a victim, realize that you too may need help. Contact your pastor or a counseling professional. Talk to a friend. Share with another family member. The scars are deep. They will get deeper if you let it deteriorate you or watch some go through it and not at least try to help. You don't have to force your help just let that person know you are there to turn to so when they are ready to turn their life around they might come to you for guidance because you open that door. It is hard going through as a victim or being the abuser or watching it from a distance destroy a family but there is hope. You are Gods child and he loves for you to do his work so just try for him and help yourself or others. Maybe they might not take your help but God is pleased that you offered it.
There is hope and healing in Christ "who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion." (Psalm 103:3-4)
