Video game thread

Just a relaxed thread about video games. What are you playing, what do you plan on playing or buying in the future. Etc. Right now im playing Sega Genesis Collection and Xenoblade 2 and I want to buy DMC5 hopefully soon

I tend to play mindless open world Ubisoft style stuff anymore. It's good for doing other things like listening to books. I've been playing Homefront Revolution, which isn't too bad. I think I picked it up during a sale for $10 for the edition with all the DLC. I haven't played a good single player game with a fairly linear campaign in awhile. That's probably why I often feel too burnt out to play games in the evening. Outside of that I play Forza occasionally, and Rocksmith 2014. The last one is good as music practice, too.

I mostly play on Xbox anymore so I have cut back my game purchases. Most of the stuff I bought on sale last fall showed up on Games Pass in the last couple of months. I held off on Anthem after getting burned by Fallout 76, and am glad. I've been resisting the urge to pick to The Division 2. Borderlands 3 might suck me back in unless there is something completely wrong with it. I don't pre-order anymore. I've been burned too many times, and there really aren't any developers that make consistent quality that I can blind buy anymore.

I do have a Switch, but hardly ever play that either. I did love what I played of Zelda BOTW and Super Mario Oyssey. I would buy a new rerelease of Twlight Princess, Wind Waker or Metroid Prime if they ever get around to it.

I used to play The Sims 3, but only to build custom houses that were like really really nice. I also have been 'playing' FSX (flight simulator) since 1995, but I haven't played it in awhile. I have this cool racing sim called Project Cars that I bought a few years ago and have barely touched. I also have so many old games that I barely played taking up a bunch of space in my closet..

I recommend Exit Fate to anybody who likes RPGs. Great story, much better than the standard JRPG junk. Also it's free.

Unfortunately there are few like it these days. The last RPG I played with a really good story was Dust: An Elysian Tale. That was... a while ago.

There's not much worth talking about in video games these days. The biggest news lately is Battletech, and that's not much. Trite story, gameplay right out of XCOM, bugs, unjustifiably high hardware usage for the graphics it has...

What about Fallout 76 burned you?

I kind of quit before too many of the bigger controversies started happening with the game, but it jsut wasn't well designed for an online game. Bethesda games usually have bugs, but they were kind of more of an issue with needing to be always online and there not being much of a story or even NPCs. Exploring and collecting was less compelling without some of those framing devices. I loved 3 and New Vegas, and liked what I played of 4.

I did read that they may be adding some NPCs and fixing some of the other issues with the game with future updates. I might give it another try in awhile.

One thing I have learned from countless hours prowling through the gog.com stacks: When a game's description starts out with six paragraphs about the skills system, card battles, equipment selection or other mechanics of a game, it will only have at best a poor excuse for a story. There are a LOT of video games out there that have "make the player feel he has accomplished something" as their only objective.

I generally don't care too much about story in games. There are some expections where I love the story, but it usually isn't a problem for me. In Bethesda's games, the stories are usually not too great, but it is helpful to have that framing device in an RPG. I don't play many JRPGs anymore because I find they go to the other extreme and I get sick of watching cut scenes and all of the other stuff. It annoys me when it feels like story is impeding gameplay. For other genres, story isn't a big deal at all for me. Like racing games or puzzles or card games, etc.

I think having humans in the game to get quests from would have helped Fallout 76 a lot, though. Your quests generally just come out of nowhere instead of interacting with NPCs, or they come from interacting with a terminal. There's a story reason, but it lays the mechanics a little too bare.

I guess it's not really story I'm necessarily looking for. The first thing I do in most Bethesda games is ignore the main quests so I can run off and explore. But without any sort of framing devices at all, it just leaves you with the game loops and they are kind of bare bones. It's interesting from a game design standpoint. Stuff like Deus Ex, I care about the world and the story a lot more.

Yeah, some games don't really need a good story if the gameplay is good enough.

And yes, DX - the first one - was awesome. I saved and reloaded SO many times just to see what would happen if I did this or that. It seemed the devs thought of every choice. There was even a Manderly line for if you killed the UNATCO guard who showed up at the top of the statue.

I was actually a beta tester for the latest version of GMDX. That was even more awesome... though on highest difficulty you can't grenade-climb any more, and you'll get a big surprise if you try.

What's that rule? Every time you talk about Deus Ex, someone installs it? I haven't played it in a few years. That's still probably my favorite game ever, maybe Bioshock is up there.

How is GMDX?

I liked the more recent sequels, but they are nowhere near as good.

GMDX is a mod for the original game. It makes everything look LOTS better, and changes some of the game balance just a bit.

Though you can still totally farm tranq darts at the boat dock. Like, whole clips of tranq darts. The GMDX dev fiddled with this and that, including reducing the enemy ammo count or changing firing range so player wouldn't be able to dodge darts as easily, but nothing really worked well enough.

Metroid Prime 4 has been postponed again but the good news is Retrostudio is back at the helm didnt like BOTW the first time playing but I restarted before finishing since I forgot what happend now I love it! I have pretty much all the Zelda games

I've been watching the massive spectacle of 76 since the beginning it looked like they where intentionally doing it to themselves for a while

This one has a big pond full of koi's in the front but it's hard to see. The road on the right goes over the pond and into the big garage... It still needs landscaping and furniture lol

I kind of lost interest in video games, but I'll always cherish the memories I have of playing the old Mario and Sonic games on the Nintendo and Sega Genesis when I was a kid. The good old days when I was so young and carefree. I know this thread is probably meant to be about more current, up to date video games, but I just wanted to say that. Please forgive me.

i picked up Sekiro last week, but haven't had a chance to play since the weekend, so i'm not very far into it yet at all.

it's hard. i like that. there's an immediate sense that to play this game, i have to build up a lot of skill at it, and patience, and perseverance. at the same time, there is a lot of freedom to approach fights in different ways.

only recommended if you enjoy a brutally challenging experience
definitely not if you get frustrated easily

'multiplayer' Fallout clued me in right away that i didn't want to touch that game, even tho i'm a really big fan of that and the Elder Scrolls series. i'm still finishing FO4 -- i definitely do not play those kinds of games in a way that would be conducive to multiplayer experience, at all

Nah, a lot of those games still hold up well. I don’t play them that much but enjoy revisiting them occasionally. I setup a Retropie awhile back to play those.

I have always liked the idea of maybe having a co-op option in one of them. I do find Fallout 76 was a better use of multiplayer than going straight up MMO like Elder Scrolls Online.

Lol no its about all video games your welcome here 9 times outta 10 I'm more likely going to play a ps1 or ps2 or a SNES or genesis game I'm more into the older stuff
