No one can 'perform' themselves into heaven, just as no one can under perform themselves out of it. Our salvation is not based on our merits. Grace is Gods unmerited favor on us through our faith in the finished work of Jesus.

Do you ever think about why it is called "the finished work of Jesus"? It is because the 'work' of salvation was all done by Him! There is nothing for us to 'do' to be saved, but there is something to believe (John 3:16).

I believe that because Jesus was born of a virgin, lived a completely sinless life, and gave his life on the cross *for me* and was raised from the dead three days later.... He made Himself the perfect sacrifice for me! It is not up to me to 'perform' but to believe that because my faith in Him, I am as righteous as God (2 Cor. 5:21). It is the requirement of God that in order for me to spend eternity in heaven, I must be as righteous as He is, and there is no possible way for that to happen but by faith that Jesus sacrificed Himself for me, and receive Him as my personal Savior.

What can I do to add to HIS righteousness? What fault can I have after placing my trust in Him that could separate me from Him? Is His Word and His righteousness not good enough? Must I add to it by my 'performance' of obedience? If you have answered yes to this question, I submit to you that it's possible you are not saved at all. If you believe that your level of obedience contributes AT ALL to your salvation, you are either lost, or deceived! If you have once accepted this truth and been saved, you can be deceived if you don't stay close to Him through the Word, and there is no possible way to grow spiritually without living the truth of accepting His righteousness for salvation.

Our level of obedience has nothing to do with being saved. We obey out of love, not out of fear or duty. If our trust is in Him, there is no fear (Romans 8:28-39), for He is God! Our obedience contributes to our spiritual growth, not our salvation. Justification is by faith alone (Romans 5:1)!
