Hey computerman, do you know why not all recent threads are in New Posts? For instance: I don't see this one there.
 
Because you posted the last post, so it's not 'new' anymore for you. New posts means 'you haven't read yet'

what/ where is a "standard gateway"? ...my internet fails there all the time... is it the closest router or something?
 
Normally yes. 192.168.0.1 or something like that. Google the brand of your router, and look for the default ip adress...
