Response: --- Many good answers, but there is something missing, which we need to ask. --- Why was "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani" written in an unknown language?
When we have questions there is nothing like reading the context to help us understand, or make us more confused. Matthew 27:
45 Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land.
46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?"
47 Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, "This Man is calling for Elijah!"
48 Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink.
49 The rest said, "Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to save Him."
50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.
51 Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split,
52 and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised;
53 and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.
45 --- Three hours of darkness as though the sun bowed itself to He, who was "The Light of the world," --- John 8:12.
46 --- The mysterious words. --- If they were Hebrew or Aramaic, they would have been understood by everyone because that was their language, (Aramaic is a dialect of Hebrew).
47 --- Some said, "This Man is calling for Elijah." --- (Did anyone say, "No, no, He spoke in Aramaic). --- They were obviously stunned at the saying, so all of the Hebrew scholars listened to the ones who suggested that Eli, meant Elijah.
48 --- Someone offered to give Jesus a drink, but:
49 The rest said, "Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to save Him." --- (The rest would be the knowledgable Jews, --- but they were also influenced to see if Elijah would come and save Jesus.)
50 Jesus cried out again and 'yielded up His spirit.' --- That was when 'the debt of sin' was paid for, and 'death was defeated' because there was an earthquake and the veil of the Temple was torn down opening the Holy of Holies, --- and the graves of the saints were opened.
They may well have associated the words of Psalm 22:1 with the words of Jesus, --- believing that "Eli," referred to God, --- but if that WAS the interpretation, --- there would have been no reason to include the unknown words, would there?
So, a little more to consider.
