No one is suggesting we forsake the Bible as you imply. On the other hand I am saying that studying to shew ourselves approved does include doing as Job8:8 instructs. It is our duty as Christians to examine what those of the former ages said in light of the Scriptures to aid in our understanding.



Where do you come up with your 95% figure, is it just more of your guess work? The reason Job8:8 instructs us to enquire of those of the former ages is because it can be an aid to learning if we examine what they say in light of the Scriptures. No is suggesting we blindly accept what they said as if they were all knowing, but instead we examine their words in light of Scripture.



So Job8:8 is in error and the all knowing petert is correct? I doubt that. I think I will heed the word of Scripture and enquire of those from the former ages by reading the books their words are recorded in. If you choose to ignore the words of Job8:8 so be it, but I suspect it would be wise not to condemn others for doing as Scripture instructs.





So because you disagree with Job8:8 it’s ok to take an extreme point of view and hold it against people that do as Job8:8 instructs? As you are led friend, as you are led!

Are you upset because I am pulling down your idols..

Jeremiah 1:10 See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant.

Exodus 34:14 For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:

Nothing about Job8:8 suggests Study everything/books and rightly dividing that as the word of truth. I think you see what you want to see in scripture to suit your sin.

It’s a time thing, and Gods Jealous of your time not spent with him.

The truth of the matter is there is only one Book that’s good.

As I said in this post, its not a sin to read a book But it’s a sinful situation that the Christian faith is in because of books and time piddling around in puddles when there is a hole oceans to swim in, the Bible.

Job 8:10 Shall not they teach thee, and tell thee, and utter words out of their heart?
How are you going to inquire of those of the former age since they have since gone to be with the Lord? Many of them were Godly men who devoted their lives in search of the truth and from their studies have written great works which can be found in guess what peterT, books!

By your reasoning you want us to disregard (Job 8:8) what God’s Word is telling us.
( Not a good position to be in telling people to disregard God’s Word )
And by your reasoning we should not look at the great Bible Commentaries that were written by such great men as Albert Barnes, Adam Clarke, John Gill, Matthew Henry, and many others who have written such great works which happen to be in guess what peterT, books!
Others who dedicated their lives to Christ have shared with us their experiences in their walk with the Lord are also found in guess what peterT, books!

While God’s Word is the final authority, there is no harm in reading other books than the Bible as long as they do not defer us from the truth of God’s Word.
As doulos has already made reference to, we should verify everything we read with the Word of God to see if what we are reading is in harmony with the Word of God. To those who recognize the truth it’s just within a few pages (or less) of reading that they will either agree with what the author has written, or disagree.

You say it is because of books that the Christian faith is in the sinful condition that it is. I disagree with that and say your comment is poppycock.
I say it is because of man’s sinful ways, not because of books!

Here is a parable for you

Two baskets.

A basket on the left, and a basket on the right.

The basket on the left full of rubbish and religious nonsense and among that rubbish if you are lucky some food, a little bits of meat, a piece of a chicken wing or so no.

The basket on the right full to the top of meat and milk.

I am encouraging Christians to eat from the basket on the right.

And you are encouraging Christians to try to eat from the basket on the left.
Imagine you writing a book and I read that book and it takes me two weeks or so of my reading time, and there is nothing in it. What a waste of time when I could have been reading the Bible and sitting at the Lord's feet learning of him. And meditating on the word day and night. Two whole weeks of my reading time and the Lord waiting for me to sit at his feet.


Joshua 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

Books are tools that can be used for good or evil. It’s not the book that is evil but the user who uses the tool improperly.

LOL blame the book instead of the person. Does the book make one sin? Tell me petert when was the last time you saw a book force some one to sin? Could it be that the church is in poor spiritual condition because the church has chosen to lean on their own understanding? You know like the guy in this thread who doesn’t want people to read the writings of those of the former ages.

I read the scriptures, or meditate on them daily.

I am also reading The Anglo American Establishment, by Carroll Quigley, and The Book Of Negroes, by Lawrence Hill.
 
Of course all should be viewed through the lens of the Word.
But my husband has read exactly one complete book (other than the Bible) since I met him, and that was Hannah Whitall Smith's
"The Christian's Secret of a Happy Life". Her doctrine may be questionable, but it was that book the Lord used to show my husband
that being 'good' is not enough. It was through that book the Lord showed my husband the only Way to the Father. :)

I recently re-read "The Hiding Place" by Corrie ten Boom, and was even more amazed than the first time, if that's possible. :)

I read the bible but there are things that interest me that I read about also such as beliefs and bible translation and apocrypha these are things I read sometimes maybe once a week but I stay in the bible everyday I don't read self help books or how to books because that don't peak my intrests

Hi all,

I hope you dont mind but can i say about 2 books? Ive read about 6 books this last year and these two stand out. The first is 'Dug Down Deep' by Joshua Harris (a must read) and the other and the one that has made me re evalute my walk with the Lord and that is 'The Discipline of Grace - God's role and our role in the pursuit of holiness', by Jerry Bridges. This is a book I'll read and re-read over time.
