not long ago, a friend and i were talking about our "all time favorite places", a conversation that evolved into a lively discussion about our favorite places to be:

hole-in-the-wall joints, the cool and inspiring, comforting-because-it's familiar places, the little room in my home that feels so warm, safe and most like "home", cities that are still are in my heart that i long to return to, and so much more...

now i'm curious. whether it’s in your home, city, or beyond— or whether you’ve been there once, or one million times:

what are your favorite, familiar, memorable or even comfy places that you love?

what makes them memorable or special to you?

<---The mothership awaits my return

Mine would have to be the pond on our property. Its secluded and it's where i go to talk to God. If someone ever saw me there they would probably think that I have lost my mind. I spend alot of time there in prayer, but I also will end up wandering around just openly having a conversation with Him.(yes out loud). It brings peace to my heart when I do those things. Many times i find myself wishing I could just stay there forever, and not have to return to the daily grind of earthly life. I could go on and on tonight, but I will stop now.

That would probably be my grandmother's house. I'm very close to my grandparents and will occasionally spend time with them like sleepovers. I always feel safe there.

Being close to nature always does the trick as well. :)

since i will be 75 in august, most of my favorite places have faded into the past but of all my favorite places, the "fish pier tavern" by the old boston fish pier was the most memorable. when i was 13 or 14 years old i would sit there drinking my soda and listening to my father and his friends. my father was born in 1889 and spent his life on the sea. in the 50's he was in his 70's and going cook on a trawler out of boston. i would always try to get into boston when he came in just to sit and listen to the last of the "iron men" who sailed the wooden ships of the 19th century. i heard stories of rum running, south sea trading before WWI, and shipwrecks on the labrador coast. i learned a lot of history there. when my history teacher talked about the spanish american war i had already heard old joe bruce saying that bad beef killed more americans than spanish bullets and when they talked about WWI beginning in 1917 i had met a man who was at gallipoli. it gave me a different way of looking at both history and the world around me today. maybe the fish pier tavern and the stories i heard there had a little bit to do with me being 75 and living in shenzhen china. in any case, as a boy i met men who actually lived the history that my history teachers talked about and i met them in that smokey beer joint across from the boston fish pier

Let's see...My best friends dock back home, I mean my parents have one but so many good memories at my friends, mty little corner table at the local where my best friend and I meet for drinks, a mountain side in WV where I was saved, Camp Tekoa in NC where a lot of memories were made on church trips, and NYC.

The first would have to be my grandparents house it reminds me of a time when all I saw a goodness and happiness and love in the world. When my eyes were opened to a world of possibilities rather than shut doors. I have some great memories of this place, my cousins and I playing as kids, being mischievous, it's a time when I had not a care in the world and life was filled with such innocence. It was beautiful.

The second would be the place we moved to when we decided to move away from my grandparents (we lived next door). It was this amazing house that was so close to the beach that we would get sea sand and shells and such around the house. my cousins would come over and yell "Casper" since our house was similar to the one shown in that movie. This was the last place I had to enjoy my family and the love we shared before it all fell apart. For some reason, I adored that house, all the nooks and crannies I would 'explore' as a child. Sometimes I wish I could live there again, it was pretty amazing, waking up each morning, walking out into your porch and being able to stare at the ocean.

This one may seem a bit strange but I also seek solace in bookstores. I would spend hours upon hours there pouring over books. Bookstores make me happy. People say there is not magic in life, I say open a book and you'll find magic.

Every summer my family rents a little rustic cabin at a resort on a lake. It sounds like jetskis, kids laughing and docks creaking as they move with the waves. It smells like pine trees, lake water and bbq smoke. It is peaceful, beautiful, relaxing and fun. It's my favorite place.

Sounds like it's either Michigan or Out Wesy.

Anyway, my wife and I expect to go to Alberta in the spring. (Once the snow and ice has cleared up...)
