Can you clarify what you mean?
What misunderstanding of God do you believe is happening?
I see people striving to understand God and His nature. Would that grieve the Spirit?
Frankly, we, as a society, would take away the children of a parent (if we could) who acted the way towards those children that we constantly attribute to our own Heavenly Father. Deciding God is a certain horrible parent (by any standard we choose to apply) is really not trying to understand Him.
I firmly believe one of the things Jesus came to do was to straighten out the warped impression our religious leaders had taught us of God.

I believe it grieves the HOLY spirit when we spend more time balancing our check book, shopping, arguing on online forums, watching tv or other activities than in prayer and worship of God.
I believe it grieves the HOLY spirit when we place idols of this fallen world before our Most High creator of the world.
I agree that it grieves the Holy Spirit when we believe lies about who God is, or don't believe in how much He truly loves us.
However I believe God is more patient and loving than many think Him. He wants us to find joy, peace and contentment in our lives. He created the world with beauty to be admired and enjoyed...just not worshipped as idols. He allows us to question and learn about ourselves, each other and Him.

I read back through the thread and can only infer you are talking about the fact some people believe that God was punishing Jesus for our sins on the cross?
It is an interesting topic and really builds the foundation of our faith. It is the milk and it's important it isn't sour milk we drink.
I have heard many things but truthfully never tried to articulate what I believe happened on the cross besides the basic...Jesus died for our sins.
Never asked why he had to die?
Who killed him?

There seems to be a balance to be struck here.....The same Jesus who went to the cross to PLEASE the FATHER is the same JESUS that said to fear the one that can kill and cast into hell.....The problem is the two extremes that permeate Christianity....on the one hand the oooey, gooey, mushy God of love and the other hand is the fiery God of war and death......God loves and hates, rewards and punishes, makes alive and kills, creates and destroys, etc.....
There is a balance to be struck and the word defines said balance........most lean one way or the other and probably at one time or another we have all been bias in our view of God..........
One of the things I love to do is take one point, and try to understand and settle that point. We hardly ever do that on this forum. We seem to revel in trying to comprehend the whole Bible in a few posts. It seems impatience will not permit us to methodically and seriously work through much of anything. I have offered reading material to several people, and the usual answer seems to be that they do not want to take a week to read a book, then, perhaps, read it (or accompanying things) again, two or three times.
I honestly feel that most of us want the world's answers in 140 characters, or less. This will never happen.... consequently, we will never get those answers, and three or four years from now we will be batting back and forth yet another post on this same subject. Still getting nowhere, and finding no answers.

Maybe some. But I have learned a lot from folks here.
Spent hours listening to sermons, online books and websites, etc.
Forum threads are much like conversations in real life. They tend to wander.
You can try and steer it back but folks will still have side conversations.
I think to fully understand why the Cross we need an in depth study of Genesis 3 and Revelation 12 to begin with. It's really about the war in Heaven and Satan rebellion and not just redemption of humanity.
Well said...I believe the main reason why Christians are doing these things is because we really don't know God for who He truly is. As Willie has said - we have created a "God" in our own minds that we in our society would throw in jail for some types of behavior that we sometimes attribute to Him.
I firmly believe with every fiber of my being that when we finally see our loving Father and Lord for who they truly are - we are going to be appalled at the things we thought about them because of our religious teachings.
God is not a man as us. Never was never could be.
He has no literal face that can be viewed with our eyes.
The kingdom comes without observation.
It is why the Son of man said of his own flesh and blood ; it profits for nothing ,nada, zip .

Putting a face on a voice is how the father of lies drew Adam and Eve towards himself in order to do the pleasure of Satan's will and not that of God who remains without form.
We walk or understand Him by faith( His) and not that of our own selves.
He hides Himself in parables.
As a kingdom of priests he has given us the honor to seek out the spiritual understanding..to those without those spiritual words have no meaning.

God is so incompatible with sin that time and after He will choose to hide His face from you when you sin. The Holy Spirit will not be with you either at the moment when you sin. The result is that you are vulnerable to attacks. It's more like you are walking away from God's protection.
On the other hand, Satan is trying his best effort to make this world a place of persecution for the believers or potential believers. Satan may launch his attack for no reason. You may seek help and protection from God at the moment when you are attacked, directly or indirectly through other humans. You receive none though at the moment when God is hiding His face from you.

No it comes from prayer and study, but forums do allow you to see what others are studying.
Where does your true understanding come about?
This is such a very distorted understanding. The very thing that actually brings God running to protect and rescue us is sin. He is not afraid of sin, and He has no allergies towards it. You must quit thinking that Satan and sin are more powerful than God, and that He has to hide from them.

I don't agree with anything you just stated.
Even when we are unfaithful, God is faithful.
God will always give us protection and comfort when we seek Him if we have humble and contrite hearts. It is when we are prideful and tell God that we can handle it on our own, that He turns His face from us. It is when we refuse to admit our crime and sins that we suffer.
We are always under attack from the enemy. It is not because of our sins.
