When you say "force yourself" upon someone it means something different to what you intended LOL, at least in my native language.

PS in this case I did not use sarcasm.

You can also “force” your beliefs on someone. We say that here in the United States.

Yes, you can force your beliefs upon someone, but that will not make them believe.

I wasn’t suggesting we force our beliefs on anyone. I think that would be a bad thing. I was just explaining to Snail that there are other ways to “force” yourself onto someone than in a sexual way. In this case, I had used the expression “force myself on someone” to mean “force my religious beliefs on someone.”

Yeah, I understand that. I don't think any here would do that, knowing the futility of this.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I guess my inspiration for the thread is that atheists occasionally introduce themselves on this website, and I’m not sure what to say. I think they want us to say SOMETHING.

It is my belief the Lord doesn’t like to waste time. I think it is better to testify to these people right now, than to let them figure it out for themselves sometime in the future, don’t you?
its been my experience that most athiests don't want someone preaching to them so your best bet is to let your actions be your testimony for others to see

I heard a really good joke about an athiest. There was a college professor teaching his class that the earth was created by the big band theory. One of his students disagreed with him and said that God created the earth and everything in it. The professor argued that everything created could have been created by something other than God. This made the student very upset and finally he told the professor that he could prove his point & stood firm in his beliefs. The student said go ahead and try to prove your point professor. The professor started to grab a handful of dirt, when the student quickly stated "NO, NO, GET YOUR OWN DIRT..THAT DIRT BELONGS TO GOD

I heard a variation of it - a man was arguing with God that he could do whatever God could do. God made some butterflies with dirt. The man said, "I can do that too." So he picked up the dirt and God said, "No, no! Get your own dirt!"

When I was a boy, a friend of mine and I were walking home from school on a winter day, when we stopped at an old, dilapidated house and started throwing snowballs at each other. The elderly lady that owned the house came out and told us to go home and play with our own snow.

I differentiate between atheist and nonbeliever. I think atheists oppose religion - nonbelievers tend to be seekers - and open to spiritual ideas. Both categories of people need our best examples of our perspective-taking skills.

I think I see what you are saying.....

However, atheism relies on religion to exist. Without religion atheism would have nothing to oppose. Without religion, atheists would be agnostics - and they would simply not care about whether God existed or religion existed at all.

Most atheist today are learned people who cannot logically subscribe to a supreme being, that is, God. They cannot accept that there is any being who is not physical. Some get to the point of not believing anything exist unless they have themselves experienced it. And even worse, some believe that if they have not experienced it, then what they do experience exists because of their experience. Truly their own gods in a very small creation.

well yes you are right but thats because everything has an opposite eg on/off good/bad light/heavy religious/atheist and of course some things have a middle like being agnostic

Actually I think of it differently - I think of unbelief in the atheist manner as a lack of faith - it is not the opposite, but like cold is the absence of heat; nonbelief is the absence of belief; perhaps the misuse of belief.

I usually engage them in the hope that they will challenge my beliefs and help me learn more about my own faith. I also like the idea of experiencing a meeting of the minds.

I secretly hope to have a relationship with an atheist as meaningful as Chesterton and George Bernard Shaw.
Chesterton was not an atheist...he was a convert to Catholicism
