What do you think about this idea, for a career path?

A thing with learning a trade skill, is my mental illness. Even though I can work a job for a period of time, say 10 months. I will then break down and stop working. It's the reason I want to find freelance work, because I will not be in danger of losing employment.

Right now I collect an SSDI check and it's worth 21 hours per week. I got so much because I had worked until I couldn't do it anymore.

It might be the best thing to do is put together a portfolio and try the low poly sector. Working for Indie game makers putting together their designs. I also know how to make my own designs, for creature and characters. I should finish my study in human anatomy and try this way.

But, even though I fear working and then dropping out soon after, I think about trying to get a job for an art studio. I could try an internship, working remote.

Oh sorry, your question. I am 47 years old. I have about 20 years left until retirement age, so there is time for doing something.

Ok, you're not that young. Focus on getting healthy, physically and mentally first. How about website design?

I thought about this, doing website design. I have here a book on HTML, I have done HTML before, it's easy stuff. But, I was talking with someone on the subject, and he gave me a very long list of things needed for doing the work he said. It was confirmed by other people who do this work. It would require lots of learning to do. I can get the books on it, but the actually practice is another thing. Looks like I could be doing a years study just to get started.

3D artwork is a trade skill. So is 2D artwork, doing design. I already know how it's done, just need to practice. Build a portfolio.
 
But what do you think about artwork, seem realistic goal, or just a wish, like being a rock star or something. I searched for these things to see if it was realistic or not, and my results told me it is, but requires lots of work and dedication to make it happen. Indie games, artwork, music. Other than making game models, it's possible to get jobs making renderings, taking my sculpting skills and building beautiful scenes for things like book covers. This combined with 2d digital work. But I have no idea what to do for this. How do people do it?
 
So my questions to the art community was answered. They said it basically like any other job. You apply for it, fill out applications. Send emails to people doing projects. But what they told is that, about 1 in 100 applications get a response. And then they said that with AI going on, expect it to be more like 1 in 300 applications.
 
I think you can focus on cool artwork, really cool super hip. Make some NFTs and try to blow it up.

the term starving artist is legit..
 
Remote work will likely be communicated through messages or e-mail. For example if you have an Artstation account and post your portfolio, any interest trade will message you there. This would make any language learning redundant as you can use a translation tool and save several years of effort right away.

AI tools are rapidly trying to replace you. Big companies have used outsourced asset producers for years and will use AI whenever possible, so will the other end of the spectrum as they want a quick buck and an asset flip. Your market is somewhere in the middle, small teams and fairly small prices. Your other big buyer are those who buy assets on sale because they have an idea or project they wish one day they will start.

If you make an asset pack which is useful, you can sell very well on Unreal Engine marketplace which is now FAB. Several packs on there do extremely well and are made of characters or objects. I would suggest you think of something which is lacking that you can create, fill a gap with a versatile product at a fair price and you will sell volume.

Also you will be completing globally with talented people from Indian and Pakistan, just look at the independent contractor sites, they are willing to work for $10-$15 an hour for skilled tecnical work, because once you convert over to local currency its quit a lot.
 
I want to try going into the indie game market. I am working on a game right now I think would allow me to get started. Using low poly art, not the high end sculptures. I can play music on my organ for the game, playing some christian pieces like hymns or something.

I wanted to learn Japanese language for more than just business reasons. I was looking at it for the fun of it.

I was planning on learning cherokee language and getting involved with my peoples, but, Just last night I had a dream about that. I was warned that I would end up being bound by them, and I would be in their shoes. Also, they are in the dark.

Your dream doesn't mean what you think it does.

If you were in their shoes, bound and in the dark. What would you want?

Who do you have knowledge of that they do not?

You learning the language would allow you a way of communicating with people you care for, and since you care for them, you would share the Gospel. Do not fear.

that is another reason I would like to learn another language like Japanese. I could talk with people. And if I was making Indie games I could put stuff in it about God. I could learn the Japanese so I can do my own translations of my own games for the Japanese Indie game market. A thing about learning the language rather than using a translation tool like google, is because the AI still cannot do certain things correctly. Such as the honor system in Japan. Even a 1 year difference in age would require different way of speaking. And then the idioms. Right now the job market for translators is in demand, because AI can't do it right. The translators are using AI as an aid, speeding up their translations.

I might have the interpretation wrong for the dream, I should probably seek someone about it. Oh yes, and the Cherokee people all speak English. Cherokee language is spoken only as second language now. There isn't really a language gap, unless they live in another country. I just thought I could connect with my own peoples by knowing the language.

So what I have done is revisited the violin business. It was not a failure like I was thinking it was. It was a great success. Only, I need to go about it much slower. I got into financial trouble because I was attempting to move too quick.

Also, I can work on the indie projects at same time. Because it takes long time doing just 1 violin, waiting.

Learn Japanese. If I can get good enough speaking that language I could maybe take my artwork to Japan. I am talking about remote work.

After studying practice Japanese, go for a third language, like Korean.

Taking 1 year with the artwork, 1 year with the Japanese. I can study the Japanese at same time I am doing artwork.

This is with the idea that I have 20 years left until retirement age. After 1 year I might be able to get remote and freelance work. Having the second language as one of my job skills.

I can get that work going right there, come off SSDI and then after 19 years retire into SSI. Also, after I would claim SSI I can still be doing work.

I know I talked about the mental illness being like a bad back, but if I am working remote work and also maybe freelance It shouldn't be too hard for me.

Very ambitious ! Learning new languages is hard , I hope u r able to follow through with your plan . I admire your desire to make a living for yourself . I'm nota massive fan of technology in general but I can c it's benefits for those who feel more comfortable working solo and from home . May God bless your efforts , ask Him to show the right way to go and He will , b patient and trust in Him , He won't steer u wrong ❤️ .
