Topic: What does it mean to sing a new song to the Lord?

Psalm 96:1-5

ESV

1(A) Oh sing to the LORD(B) a new song;
sing to the LORD, all the earth!

2Sing to the LORD, bless his name;
(C) tell of his salvation from day to day.
3Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous works among all the peoples!
4For(D) great is the LORD, and(E) greatly to be praised;
he is to be feared above(F) all gods.
5For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,
but the LORD(G) made the heavens.
6Splendor and majesty are before him;
(H) strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

KJV

1O sing unto the LORD a new song: sing unto the LORD, all the earth. 2Sing unto the LORD, bless his name; shew forth his salvation from day to day.
3Declare his glory among the heathen, his wonders among all people.
4For the LORD is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods.
5For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the LORD made the heavens.

Psalm 98:1 also talks about singing a new song to the Lord.

One definition of the word new is "made or become fresh." A new song that I can sing to the Lord could be a fresh song of praise, declaring the great deeds He has done for me. Another definition of new is "original." A new song could be an original song of praise that I have written to the Lord. These are songs that I not only sing to the Lord, but that I should use as a declaration to others of the Lord's glory and marvelous deeds.

That's my take on the topic. What do others think?

I forgot to mention a couple of cool definitions for the word fresh, which is a synonym of new: "pure; free from taint; not stale; full of or renewed in vigor."

This has always been a challenging verse for me, because I'm not musically inclined.

I like the interpretation that a new song might be an old song, sung with a inward freshness of spirit, that proclaims what God is doing in your life.

I reckon that since the Hebrews used Psalms in worship, they sang this Psalm more than once, so this isn't some mandate to use 'new' songs all the time.

Great point, Stilly, an inward freshness of spirit.

P.S. Psalms talks about making a "joyful noise" unto the Lord. That helps all of us who might be musically challenged. :)

Rev 14:2 And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps:
Rev 14:3 And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty four thousand, who were redeemed from the earth.
heres some more examples of the singing a new song
Rev 5:8 And when he had taken the book, the four living beings, and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odors, which are the prayers of saints.
Rev 5:9 And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals of it: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and language, and people, and nation;
Rev 5:10 And hast made us to our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.
thats a strange little song
Psa 33:2 Praise the LORD with harp: sing to him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings.
Psa 33:3 Sing to him a new song; play skillfully with a loud noise.
recon this is what the psalmist is talkin about?
I dunno tho,
or it could be this that the psalmist is singin about
Isa 42:10 Sing to the LORD a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth, ye that go down to the sea, and all that is in it; the isles, and their inhabitants.
or this could be what the psalmist is talking about
Psa 66:1 To the chief Musician, A Song or Psalm. Make a joyful noise to God, all ye lands:
Psa 66:2 Sing forth the honor of his name: make his praise glorious.
Psa 66:3 Say to God, How terrible art thou in thy works! through the greatness of thy power shall thy enemies submit themselves to thee.
Psa 66:4 All the earth shall worship thee, and shall sing to thee; they shall sing to thy name. Selah.
which would cross refrence back to the rev5:8-10
or not

I often relate to the Psalms and share in their trials by similar situations that fits the words of the Psalms. One can say that when God does something for us now, we should sing a new song declaring that deliverance.. that help.. that work...as we may also find words for that new song that was sung before, but it would be new to us for we are singing it with thanksgiving and praise to God as coming from us.

I would imagine that when we are taken Home, a new song will be put on our lips to sing by God Himself since that new song has never been sung before... as God has done from before for others on earth.

Psalm 40:1I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. 2He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. 3And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.

Revelation 5:9 And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;

There is even a special choir established by God to sing this particular song.

Revelation 14:3And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth.

So whomever is singing.. the song will not be mouthed because it was just a selection for one of the church hymns to sing, but those that sing will mean what they say as the song will not be of empty praises.

How I love the Lords sence of humor. Receintly this scripture came to me several time and in many ways over several days. I questioned why he would want me to sing as my vioce is not what it used to be. I had a sorrow that had been on my heart for most of my life but had made peace with it through our Lord jesus. As I was praying a few nights ago I was pouring out my heart to Jesus again about this as there was a new reminder of how this affected my life . Again the scripture on sing a new song came to me. I do so love those moments when Jesus speaks clearly to our hearts. He told me that I was to sing with joy with full gratitude and praise about my sadness. So I did. As I praised him I realized that all things are his creation and beautiful, even those things we dont really like. Now I had always praised God for all things, even the bad, acknowleging he was in controll . This was different, Jesus showed me that all things are good and glorious in his creation. I could see Job in the moment when God spoke to him and saw him realizing not only Gods power but how all is his and all is good. I wish I had the words to describe the joy I had in that moment for all things in life, the eternal life that is through our Lord Jesus christ.The other scriptures that stood out then were God looked at what he created and saw that it was good and The word was with God. Praise God that he has given us the eyes to see and the ears to hear. God bless, pickles
