I searched for the word "meiditate" and a link on BLB is below that lists where this occurs.

My question is, what does this meditation consist of? I would like to have a meditation time, but I'm not into meditation in the traditional eastern sense of sitting and freeing your mind and such. I just don't know what the Bible means when it talks about meditating on God's word.

I hear about people being helped by meditating and I would like to test this, but I'm just really not sure how to do this in a Christian sense.

Think of a cow chewing her cud. Cows ruminate or re-chew their food so they are able to digest it more thoroughly. Meditation on the word of God is thinking and rethinking what you have studied and allowing God to give you more of the truth contained therein.

You will hear a lot about "meditating" here. And it will mostly probably be correct. But, what you may not hear is that we need to develop the instinctive and almost automatic ability to relate the Scripture we have meditated upon to daily situations as we encounter them.......... AND the quickness to put that association into actions.

I believe that it means that we should not read God's Word as if it were a magazine article.

We should read God's word seeking to apply its truth to our daily lives especially our decision making

I think that meditation in eastern view means to empty yourself and to think of nothing.

While in western meaning it means to think deeply about something without distractions.

a lot of good definitions here. Eastern mysticism seeks to empty oneself, G-d desires we be filled with Him.
and this is a great description -
"and allowing God to give you more of the truth contained therein."

Many times we lean on our own understanding when He desires we seek His guidance.

Deuteronomy 30:11-13, "For this Law which I command you this day is not hidden from you, nor is it beyond your reach. It is not up in heaven, so that you have to ask; Who will ascend up into heaven for us, and bring it to us, so that we may hear it and then do it? Nor is it beyond the sea, so that you have to ask; Who will cross the sea, and bring it to us, so that we may hear it and then do it?"

Psalm 1, “Blessed is the man who shall not walk in the counsel of the wrong, And shall not stand in the path of sinners, And shall not sit in the seat of scoffers, But his delight is in the Torah of יהוה, And he meditates in His Torah day and night. For he shall be as a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That yields its fruit in its season, And whose leaf does not wither, And whatever he does prospers. The wrong are not so, But are like the chaff which the wind blows away. Therefore the wrong shall not rise in the judgment, Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For יהוה knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the wrong comes to naught.”

Joshua 1:8-9, “Do not let this Book of the Torah depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you guard to do according to all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and act wisely. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid, nor be discouraged, for יהוה your Strength is with you wherever you go.”

Deuteronomy 6:5-9, “And you shall love יהוה your Strength with all your heart, and with all your being, and with all your might. And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates."

Very good topic! I think Christian meditation is letting God talk to us. Many Christians keep telling God about their wishes, but never listen to Him. What I do is this: I kind of empty my mind and ask God to show me what is really important in my life.

I'll let those who don't know that they don't know tell you what is meant by the term mediatate as used in Biblical scriptures. But I did read an article once on the subject which referenced 'mediation' which I copied this exerpt from.

"...mediate upon what is written in Ecclesatics[SUP]*[/SUP] since knowledge of the scriptures doesn't give one wisdom, but surely during their studies of the scriptures that those who disagree will say that they have heard "Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom, and with all thy getting get understanding."[SUP]**[/SUP] But somehow they missed the immutable thing. Yet you can't get wisdom by studying the scriptures since wisdom can not be obtained from knowledge without mediating upon that which was obtained by studying to understand[SUP]1[/SUP] that man is only given by the LORD unto those who hear him.[SUP]2[/SUP]

thank you Marcelo, your post tells all who read it about your relationship with the Living G-d through Christ, the essential part of out walk with Him in this life as we prepare to be with Him for eternity after this life. Mere knowledge "about" G-d is not relationship "with" G-d.

Meditate to think about and concentrate on the message of scriptures..

The word "meditate" in Psalm 1 does not mean to just think about. It comes from the root Hagah and means "to speak repetitively, or mutter". For instance, read the words aloud - over and over - until it sinks deep into your spirit. The Jewish people in ancient times did this and it was called davening (sp?).

I always meditate this way. It is good to "hear" the Word and it also becomes a part of your vocabulary.

Genesis 24

62And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahairoi; for he dwelt in the south country. 63And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, the camels were coming. 64And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the camel. 65For she had said unto the servant, What man isthis that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant had said, It is my master: therefore she took a vail, and covered herself. 66And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done. 67And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother's death.

Wisdom
Evening wisdom reminds me of the inummerable sands of Faith that are given Grace to heal. As so each grain is healed by His stripes they grow into a pearl and are lifted in praise as the Pearl that the Lord intended.
As Mary rejoiced, rejoice when suffering.
Love, joy as a tithe of tithes to which will be prepared for the day.

Meditating, to me, is something I have come to call, "reverse apostasy", or a drifting TO God, in Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior (High Priest and Kinsmen Redeemer). This is also called "selah" in the O.T. Especially, in the Psalms.
