Crucifixion was a method of putting people to death and they used nails and crosses.
Jesus died between two thieves on crosses.
1 Corinthians 1:18 ¶ For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
We're saved by Jesus taking our punishment on the cross and believing in Him and He appeared after his resurrection to 500 followers which demonstrated He had the keys to death and hell. And the cross demonstrates that Jesus' death saves us and not works which is why Paul calls the cross foolishness to those who perish. It is foolishness because those who perish believe in works salvation.

The cross itself is pagan, It derives from the worship of the sun God, where they would find the best looking and tallest tree in the groves of trees. They would strip the side branches of the tree and then take the two biggest ones and attach them on the trunk like stretched out arms. Then they would worship.
The cross in Roman times was a sacrifice to the sun god and thus used the same shape. Thus cursed is anyone who hangs on a tree. The person was held of the ground to the sun as sacrifice to the sun god.
The cross itself is pagan. That does not however effect or diminish what Jesus did for our sins.
Christ made a show of his enemies openly, the cross was one of his enemies. The cross represents the human chromosome, Christ triumphed over the curse of our DNA.

For Christians the Cross encompasses the total theological significance of the "finished work" of Jesus Christ....inclusive of His death, burial, resurrection, ascension, Pentecostal outpouring and all of our future and last expectations.

It depends on the person; like some believes that it represents the crucifixion and some use it as a protection device or an reminder to help prevent them from falling into temptation. But to Moses, since he was raised in the ways of the Egyptians, it has a more of a symbolic meaning. Like at the time when Moses has made the cross in the wilderness is to remind God that the people has the same desires as their king, and so to have mercy on them all.
Acts 7:22 Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful in speech and action.
Romans 5:14 Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who is a pattern of the one to come.

The cross is mainly a Christian symbol, to us it represents salvation because jesus died on the cross for our sins (and rose again). The reason for it appearing in some flags is that these countries are/ were predominantly Christian (for Scandinavia though, probably all of Europe really, although many consider themselves Christians, the countries are officially "neutral"
The cross of Jesus Christ was the cross on which He was crucified FOR US. He was offered as a sacrifice for us, dying for our sins so that we might be forgiven. He 'bore our sins in His own body on the cross' (1 Pet 2.24). He suffered for us, the One who was righteous and without sin, for the unrighteous who had offended against God and were sinful.
His death on the cross was sufficient penalty for all our sins.
Then He rose again and gives eternal life to all who believe on Him. Because He lives, those who are His will live as well
We are freely counted as righteous by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus, and are therefore acceptable to God through Him..
It appears on flags because they were once Christian countries. people wear it because they seek to honour Him. ,

I would think the cross means different things to different people. To me it would be a reminder that Jesus Christ died on the cross to save us from our sins.

No, the cross is empty signifying His resurrection!!! The cross is where Jesus defeated death, curses, sickness, satan any and all evil.

It wasn't just someone who died on the Cross, it was Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. The ironic thing about it all is that we are the ones who should die on the Cross, but Jesus took our place.
