This morning I faced a double dilemma. I was walking behind a woman who was using a cane. As we approached a door I said, "I'm behind you; I'll get the door for you." I wasn't sure what her response was going to be, but she was most gracious. And there you have it, two strangers proving once again that the haters will not be triumphant.

Exactly, we need to push ahead of this humanistic attitude. Manners are gone for both men and women. My husband doesn't like taking items back to the store,or complaining in any way. While I appreciate his manners I said "we lost customer service,people just gave up and now we have horrible service" There is a nice way to get your point across. We need to band together, get rid of the PC nonsense that really is militant, and get back to old fashioned values.

I've lived most of my life in the South and men are VERY gentlemanly here...even young men. I teach high school students and I see young men everyday opening doors, picking up dropped books, letting girls go first, etc. all without being asked.

Amen to that sister! It's one of the main reasons we love raising our sons here...

Oddly enough, when we go north (PA) people think they are being sarcastic fro saying "yes sir" and "yes ma'am" or that WE as parents are militant... lol...

Though we were both in the Marine Corps... hmmmm:/

When we allow others to go first, we are ascribing to them VALUE. This is why we get up for the elderly or the pregnant on buses, or why we hold open a door for someone else, or help carry shopping bags, or say "please" and "thank you." It's to remind people that they are VALUABLE...inherently so. Their value isn't based on their beauty, age, income, education, or even their behavior....they are valuable because they are made in the image of God.

My brother in law,who is southern, came up to Canada for the first time. He stood in the doorway of a restaurant and held the door open for people and all he got was dirty looks. I said to him" they don't do that here,let them open their own door." I think men don't know what to do anymore so they keep to themselves and mind their own business.

This is so hard for me to fathom. I cannot imagine returning such a kindness with disdain. I'm thankful to live in an area where people of all genders, races and ages delight in showing one another these small kindnesses, and gratefully accept them when they are offered.

To be a gentleman? No sorry. The girls at school beat them up.
My youngest was in love with a girl but she pushed him to the fence and the crush was over.

Yes, I live in the south now and find it very different here. I hate to knock Canada,where I was born,but I find there is a lot more liberal mindset there.

What you're talking about has NOTHING to do with chivalry. Basically you're saying, "Men don't have to be nice to women unless women are nice first." This is not remotely biblical. However, it does express what THE WORLD believes.

Your taking my words out of context, I never said chivalry was based on the bible. Jesus never had a girlfriend, although I'm sure he was nice to Mary Magdelene the same as he was to men. I just don't know where you get the idea that women should be held up to a higher standard than everyone else "to honor and protect womanhood". I was just stating an awkward fact about our society in general. Men are constantly judged to such a high standard that being nice and chivalry like has no reward. Try setting up a profile at christianmingle and using a profile pic of some overweight dude with acne and write the most Godly facts about yourself you can think of. I guarentee you would get less responses that a pic of a handsome man with a less Godly or even an agnostic profile. It's just human nature. Like Oscar Wilde said, "One does not see anything until one see's it's beauty."

Yes,but you forget beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What I may find good looking another person may not.My husband finds me attractive,I hope, others wouldn't give me a second look. All in taste.

Most men want a slim, slender, athletic or petite frame. Curves are pushing it. Overweight single moms are usually last in that line. Sure you might find some guys that are chubby chasers, but they make up a very small minority or just have low self-esteem and can't get anything better. Sounds harsh but it's reality. I hate talking about this because it sounds like I'm being bitter, which I'm not. The fact is that if my wife was 300lbs it wouldn't matter how much of a virtuous Godly woman she was, I wouldn't have dated her. If I was 5'2", I guarentee she would have passed going on a date with me and my options would be limited.

3. You presume that men who are willing to date someone outside the cultural norm of beauty lack esteem.

So, here's my response:

You're 23. While you have a male mind, your frontal lobe isn't fully formed yet. As a result, some of your views are limited in their scope and understanding.

When you are older and have a fully developed frontal lobe, some life experience, and the inner work of the Holy Spirit, you will (hopefully) think differently about humanity and the value of virtue over appearance.

Well, I'm not married yet and I little bit disagree with SparkelEyes.
Genesis 2:18 & 20 The Lord God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him…So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.
Genesis 2:21-22 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
Woman was the finishing touch and completion of God's creation of mankind.
Genesis 2:23 The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman,' for she was taken out of man.
" Genesis 2:24-25 For this cause a man shall leave his father and his mother and shall cleave to his wife; and they shall become one flesh And the man and his wife were both naked and not ashamed.
This is God's original plan for marriage. It is to be given top priority among human relationships. Man and woman in unity with each other and their Creator-one flesh-together showing forth the image of God.
