the positions of the modern christian churches are more Roman catholic as opposed to the historical protestant faith.
Perhaps but most Reformed, Lutheran and Anglican/Episcopals have strayed way further from Scripture than most Evangelicals.

Magenta. I think it's a universal issue across all modern churches. if I may ask, what congregation do you attend?

Have you attended all modern churches?

I am not going to tell you where I go to church, no. It is a nondenominational, Bible believing, Bible teaching church, though, and my pastor is a wonderful teacher and human being who loves those in his care. You are speaking in such broad terms and generalizing things which may plague certain churches but I must say I cannot accept the problem as you present it, especially since you thinkit is universal when clearly it is not.

first I would say that the core teachings of protestant churches are no longer taught in the congregations. the teachings of justification, election, original sin, the commandments are not a primary focus. the works of the magisterial reformers are not being used in the congregations.

They are taught in Dutch reformed churches. They hear the 10 commandments every week.

though I haven't attended all modern churches, the predominant view amoung modern writers, evangelical leaders like Joel orsteen, max lucado, John hagen and others don't represent the historical protestant faith. their theology is more Roman catholic than protestant.

I have a tremendous amount of respect for the Dutch reformed, many American churches have moved away from its historical positions.

You have take a very select few to represent many and that is plainly wrong. After the church service today I was invited over to my pastor's house for lunch with his wife, family, and a few other congregants. The interchange of thoughts and ideas was quite lively, with many wonderful authors highly spoken of by my pastor during part of the afternoon when the conversation turned to such things. None of them fell anywhere near the camp of Joel Osteen :p Not even Lucado.

I would even say the modern Roman catholic congregations don't represent the positions they held at trent.

Really? I mean, at least here in Australia, the Lutheran Church is rather straight-laced. Its two major issues (in most churches here) are its almost unanimous support of theistic evolution and almost forgetting that Holy Spirit exists.

Many modern so call christian churches, not really the bride of Christ but a counterfeit. Have set in place a abomination in the minds set of individuals attending those services, and these individuals strongly believe there self appointed teachers . Beforehand without studying the word of God the Holy scripture in prayer for guidance and wisdom to have a understanding & relationship with the LORD Jesus Christ , they are taught that it is possible to accept Christ without forsaking the world.

A lot of self appointed teachers these days.

Don't all of them belong to the Word of Faith heresy?

I wouldn't hold them up as "all modern churches"

I highly doubt they are Roman Catholic or protestant. They more than likely belong to a Universalist church that will try and combine aspects of all the world religions.

Hi calvinsx76. I understand where you are coming from, and I don't think it matters in the long run. The idea of the Church belongs to Jesus and it is only with Him we have any meaning. These early reformers did their bit, they stood up and opposed the tyranny of the RCC who killed a lot of what they called heretics, but then the reformed churches did the same back.

That is why church buildings in the UK (those over 150 years old) have steeples, a man was set on watch to look out for riders or approaching enemies, with a good view from the top the congregation had time to flee.

Jesus came to set up His Church. We as people are called to be His. How we accept His calling is up to us. Some wait and see what God will do some step out in faith while some run ahead and make up stuff as they go along. Jesus called us to relationship, with God through Himself and with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. It is those who have the Spirit of God and listen and wait on Him, acting on prompting before moving out that see the will of God as it is.

The upshot for all this is it really does not matter what you or I call ourselves, Jesus is the only true way, there is no other. When the kingdom comes in physical reality, whether within us by the Holy Spirit or at Jesus return, there is only one focus we should be looking for, only one way our minds and hearts and souls should be spending their energies on, JESUS.

no doubt! many, not all.

and i see no reason not to stand on the shoulders of men used by God in the past.
i've been reading the English Puritans lately.

but maybe not 'magisterial reformers'?
that phrase is probably off-putting to most readers here.

welcome to the site. :)

just the opposite....I believe the message of the Gospel isn't being preached. the historical protestant churches preach on justification by faith, election by God and the depravity of sin. subjects that are barley discussed.

Maybe because Augustine and Calvin got it wrong.

There are still some Churches teaching the Doctrines that removed us from the Catholic Church. But we do have tons of Churches who have turned its back on these teachings to seek after those who tickle their ears with myths.

I'm sure you won't understand this. And I am not trying to be flippant...... but, Thank God! It is high time, well past in fact, to lose a lot of that, before we actually lose Christ.

I don't say I agree with the men you mentioned, but how carefully could you have studied what they believe if you got two of their three names wrong? Seriously. That doesn't show much depth to your investigations.
