We would already have the "star wars" space missile defense system that Bush proposed back in the 90's. (It was to be a laser defense sattelite system that would detect and shoot down any missiles from outer space right after they were launched)

You're right. We don't have enough dough for our military or much else besides.

The trouble is nobody can agree on what constitutes a "vital" expenditure because nobody is willing to slice the throat of their sacred cow. The solution to this conundrum?

Space colonization. Duh.

I thought USA were in debt.

that proposal started with Reagan in the 80's actually. i figure we do have it -- something like it. our military has a strategic habit of pretending it doesn't quite have the capabilities it really has. the military has its own space program completely separate from NASA, with a semi-unknown budget. whenever anything is launched into space amateur astronomers all over the globe can see it, and anyone who looks at the sky carefully can track satellites. most of the military hardware in orbit, it's not publicly disclosed what it is and what its purpose is. a good guess is spy satellites for a lot of it, but who really knows what they've got going on up there?

It would be too good and too cheap. Therefore carnal and greedy powers will do anything to delay such technologies as much as possible.

Also, islam needs to be financed from oil, so there is probably some reason for it. More islam -> more wars -> more muslim immigration -> more chaos, more profit from selling weapons, more control over citizens in the name of safety etc.

It would be great if it does exist, but I have doubts because they spent so much on that silly international space station which really doesn't do much except be a hotel for astronauts.
