What is it to grieve the....

This question is very important to me so please refrain from debates if possible.
In scripture it states we are to not grieve the Holy Spirit.
So I ask simply?
How can or what do we do, that would grieve the Holy Spirit?

Please keep answers to short responces if possible, as long ones just cause me to loose focus.

I have always seen the Holy Spirit like a quiet gentleman. He whispers when others shout and he slips out the back door when contention, strife, and sin arrive.

I think we grieve Him the most when we continually put our selfish will before the Father's. We grieve him when we seek after our own desires rather than God's.

I think that when we abide sin in our lives, even things that may seem innocent, we push him away.
 
First, we grieve the Holy Spirit when we use him to excuse our sinfulness. Second, we grieve the Holy Spirit when we pit him against the Scriptures. Third, we grieve the Holy Spirit when we suggest he is jealous of our focus on Christ. It is difficult to keep it simple, but as you wish sister, be blessed and I really do think that the Holy Ghost will put up a fit if we get close to that sin, He will warn us I am sure.

To grieve the Holy Spirit means, "To upset Him, To make Him sorry".

There are a lot of things that we can do to grieve the Holy Spirit, And if we put Eph 4: 17--31 in it's right context with V30,
We can see some of the things that would grieve the Holy Spirit.
So when you disobey the word of God, or when you disobey what the Holy Spirit tells you, You will grieve Him.

Another thing is found in 1 Thess 5: 19.
To "Quench the Spirit", Means to, "Put out His fire, To hinder His operations".
We should let the Holy Spirit have His way in our lives And in our Church meetings.
 
In my experience - I have grieved the Holy Spirit, when I've continued to do certain things that I know He doesn't want me to do.
 
To understand what it means to grieve the Spirit, we must first understand that this indicates the Spirit possesses personality. Only a person can be grieved; therefore, the Spirit must be a divine person in order to have this emotion. Once we understand this, we can better understand how He is grieved, mainly because we too are grieved. Ephesians 4:30 tells us that we should not grieve the Spirit. We grieve the Spirit by living like the pagans (4:17-19), by lying (4:25), by being angry (4:26-27), by stealing (4:28), by cursing (4:29), by being bitter (4:31), by being unforgiving (4:32), and by being sexually immoral (5:3-5). To grieve the Spirit is to act out in a sinful manner, whether it is in thought only or in both thought and deed.

I loved all your responces, so true and most I was familier with.

It is the above quote that speaks to what has been heavy on my heart lately.
Ive seen many debates here about the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and many shared good points about the abuse of the name.
Ive seen such myself and it breaks my heart when such gifts are abused.

But lately, it has been heavy on me that in our concern about how these gifts work today, or as some say, they dont exsist, if in doing this, we greive the Holy Spirit.
I know many have concerns about the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and I respect those concerns.
But because of what I have known, witnessed, and seen done in my life and others?
This heavyness, sadness, I believe is due to the hesitation to, even rejection of the power of the Holy Spirit.
Too many times I have seen and known these gifts of the Holy Spirit in Jesus Christ is Lord come in the flesh.
I hope to walk again, willing to live and witness more to these gifts in Jesus Christ is Lord come in the flesh.

I know some are hesitant to trust , on this subject, some even say they no longer exist.
Ill not debate or judge any who hold to this, as we all must live in Jesus and His truth as we believe in faith before God.
But, I know now as well that to accept Jesus, is to accept the Father and the Holy Spirit!
And to deny the gifts is to deny the Holy Spirit.
I only pray that these gifts will continue in my walk, as out of fear I was unwilling to act upon them lately.
And pray for forgiveness for grieving the Holy Spirit.

we grieve the HOly Spirit when we fight or do things our kids do that makes us sad: steal, lie, speak words in anger, etc.
 
I can always tell when I have grieved the Spirit because I can feel it.....physically, emotionally and mentally. Sometimes it's not the thing that I do that is the problem but the spirit in which I did it.
 
Shortest answer I can offer:

Question: "What does it mean to grieve / quench the Holy Spirit?"

Answer: When the word “quench” is used in Scripture, it is speaking of suppressing fire. When believers put on the shield of faith, as part of their armor of God (Ephesians 6:16), they are extinguishing the power of the fiery darts from Satan. Christ described hell as a place where the fire would not be “quenched” (Mark 9:44, 46, 48). Likewise, the Holy Spirit is a fire dwelling in each believer. He wants to express Himself in our actions and attitudes. When believers do not allow the Spirit to be seen in our actions, when we do what we know is wrong, we suppress or quench the Spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:19). We do not allow the Spirit to reveal Himself the way that He wants to.

it's not uncommon to doubt, not at all, Mark 9:24.
