No he was Anabaptist actually,
I'm glad I asked. I should look up the modern Anabaptist doctrines again. I don't follow them. My previous reference to them came from books on the earlier independent churches that were labeled Rebaptisers by the Roman Catholic church.

The practices vary from the different conferences and groups. Most don't use instruments in church. But then many of them will play some instruments and listen to music with instruments. It's only the really conservative ones that don't believe in it at all.

I just looked at that chapter. You already know this. Music is never forbidden to believers in use for worshipping God. It's actually commanded. David was never forbidden to give his Holy Spirit inspired psalms/songs to the chief musician to carry throughout the tribes.
The actual understanding of the passage looks like the idea is that pagan practices of chanting along with playing music is forbidden. The chanting was the name of the false deities as a method to summon to them. The same technique is used today with burning of incense while chanting a mantra. The mantra is not usually known to westerners, but many Indians know what they are. Westerners are told that the word/the mantra is a secret word that is only assigned only to the new practitioner. They are lied to. The mantras are usually taken from a list of false deities/ demons that are written in the Indian Sanskrit. They are repeated endlessly as the person listens to music and enters a hypnotic state of consciousness.

Mark 6:7
"But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking."

That brings me back to the bad proof texting of the new agers. They often half way quote one of the many verses the Bible uses about meditation to justify their heathen version of meditation.

Meditation in the Bible means to think about, cogitate upon the Word of God.
The heathen definition is the opposite. They define meditation as an emptying of the mind. It's a technique to bring about possession of the unbeliever.
I'm explaining this so much because God delivered me out of the most popular religious group of Hindu meditation practitioners when I was a child. It was really creepy to be led through a satanic/ pagan initiation ritual at a young age. I'm glad they scared me away from their stupid religion. Lol
Interesting I didn't realize that's what the chanting referred to.

Wow yes praise the Lord He delivered you from that! That's stuff is pure creepy.

That's really interesting. I've been to big conferences where a handful showed up but we never got to talk about doctrine. Around my town the only ones known for that are the Churches of Christ.

They deceived me into joining by lying about it not having anything to do with religion. They said it was a scientific method to help relax and a self help group. After the series of courses, was the initiation.

Have you ever read Frank Peretti's books? I wouldn't totally promote them but they did talk about the meditation and showed how demonic it is. It was kinda an eye-opener to me cuz I don't think I knew that much about it till I read those books.

He's a really famous author.
I never read his books, but that's good you took that truth from them. Meditation is such a major practice in America now.
Dave Hunt is an Evangelical writer who revealed some major influences from Eastern religions upon churches. I don't know of many pastors who have taught about them to warn about their subtle influences.
Dave Hunt is no longer around, but this is an old archive of a teaching on Hinduism/ yoga and meditation....in case you need a sleeping aid. Lol

what is the most interesting bad proof texting? I forget the ones used by others for not returning my tools.
Most everything makes pretty good sense when taken in context... especially within the context of the entire Word of God. The Bible tells the good, bad and ugly. I think that is a good thing. The only completely safe example is Jesus Himself.

"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11

So many people rip the out of context, and use it as a personal prophecy. In fact, God is addressing Israel, at a certain time, the fall of Jerusalem! Verse 10, the verse before verse 11, quoted above:

"This is what the Lord says: “When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring you back to this place." Jer. 29:10

God is telling them they are about to be carried off by the Babylonians to Babylon. And that he has plans for Israel, including that they will be there for 70 years. When Daniel sees this, he notes that the 70 years is complete, and to return to Judah!

"in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the Scriptures, according to the word of the Lord given to Jeremiah the prophet, that the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy years. 3 So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes." Dan. 9:2-3

How did Daniel respond? In prayer, in sackcloth & ashes! How many people who claim this verse for themselves get down on their knees in sackcloth & ashes & pray? Not very many is my guess!

Of course, there is the concept of double prophecy, sometimes things in the Bible are fulfilled once to the original people it was addressed to, and another time to people in the future. But can you really take a specific prophecy about all Judah going to Babylon for 70 years and then returning, a promise to Israel, and make it all about us? Not in this case. And most people don't seem to realize that verse 11 is addressed to Israel (Judah!) at a hard time for the nation!

A proof text is a passage of Scripture presented as proof for a theological doctrine, belief, or principle.
i learned, a text without a context is a pretext for a proof text.
but i like your way better. :)

Oh I get it! You're referring to the story you told over on the "Woodworking Area" thread. How certain people used Luke 6:34-35 to prove they didn't have to return your tools. And you're wondering if anyone else has examples of when people mishandled the Scriptures to use them as proof texts out of context?
you're a smart cookie! well done! ♥

The 6:40 minutes mark puts the video in context and then Dave Hunt is introduced.
He was an evangelical who had a podcast before they were popular, wrote books and spoke in churches on subjects addressing the apostasies that are now embraced by much of Christianity. Walter Martin was on panels with him from time to time.
