Hi all,

I have a tendency to have many apocalyptic dreams. Can't make head or tail of them.As a bible believer I do not take authority from dreams and visions. However, I am just wondering what people think about the biological process of dreams.
Is it just to clear the head of cobwebs? As in purge the mind of nonsense or something else?

Curious to hear your thoughts and do feel free to post articles from reputable sites as well.

To me dreams do one of two things:
1. Subconsciously resolved questions we have.
2. Tell us what we should do now.

It is possible, (probable), that the dreams won't answer the worries of the day, however, even if they don't, they give us a new look at yesterday's problem.

I've had the apocalyptic kind of dreams. When I wake up, they tend to make me appreciate what I already have. And they tend to reinforce my need for God.

One type of dream that bugs me though. The last two days I was woken up by hubby yelling my name in such a way that I knew it was urgent. And yet, NO! I really didn't have to be ready because dinner was coming. lol

His voice was startling enough that I couldn't go back to sleep though. (Today's my day off. The one day each week I can sleep in. Yeesh! lol)

The scientific answer is to process the days events. This can be further shown by the effective EMDR therapy for mental trauma patients.
Trauma are events trapped in the brain that do no get processed. This is why they seem so real to sufferers, because it's stronger than a processed memory.
EMDR is a way of tricking the mind into thinking it's asleep during the REM cycle (also the time we dream) and focusing on those trapped memories. This causes the mind to process the trauma, turning it into a normal memory. The most successful PTSD treatment.
So there you have it.

Hi Mooky:) Dreams are an interesting subject and they can be altered and effective in various ways. If you think about something often then it is likely it will eventually show up in your dreams, they also can be affected greatly by the thoughts you were thinking before you fell asleep or the food you ate before bed they also can be altered by the medication you take to go to sleep or what what movie or music you listened to and sometimes your dreams are simply your true feelings and thoughts.

Scientifically dreams can be explained easily however it would be wise to not discount them as merely dreams. Biblically God used dreams and visions all throughout the bible to speak to his people or to warn them of something. Discernment is vital and also testing if the dream is scriptural it took me a while to be able to discern the difference between dreams from my own mind dreams from God and dreams from the enemy. But for you have apocalyptic dreams often then I think that is something to pay attention to, would be willing to share one?

Most of the time dreams are a way for our brains to clear rubbish accumulated during the day. Its like deleting stuff off your hard drive you no longer need. They often appear as stories and bizarre events but when you remember them you often find links with things that happened to you in the real world. I retired in 2010 but up until recently I was still dreaming about being back at work and having conversations with my former colleagues even though I have had little contact with them since.

I believe I had a psychic dream a couple weeks ago. I dreamt of someone dying in a certain way that was very sad and very disturbing, but also very unique. I woke up in tears because it was so disturbing.

A few days later I was watching the news and someone had died that very same way (but nobody knew about it until this day which was a few days after my dream). I couldn't believe it. I don't even think it's ever happened before (at least I don't remember ever hearing anything like it). I'd tell you all what happened but its kind of gross so you'll probably be glad I didn't tell you.

Interesting. But this is not the direction I would like the thread to head in please.Lets stick to the biological elements of dreams.Thank-you kindly.

Well the point to my dream is that they can be psychic (predicting a future event). There is no link between biology and dreams except the REM state (deep sleep with rapid eye movement) and increased brain activity during REM.
