So this passage is often overlooked, and I want others opinions of what it means. After all, it is our Savior that spoke these words;

John 5:28-30, “Do not be astonished at this-for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice, and will come forth. Those who have practiced righteousness will be resurrected in order to live; and those who have practiced wickedness will be resurrected in order to be damned."

Some might use this verse to say that where we go at the resurrection is based on our good works. But the whole of the New Testament teaches against that. The good work that is being spoken of is the confession of Jesus as Lord (Romans 10:9).

John 6:28-29 (NASB)
[SUP]28 [/SUP] Therefore they said to Him, "What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?"

[SUP]29 [/SUP] Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent."

That’s the only good work that will grant anyone heaven, and the sin of rejecting Jesus is the only sin that will send anyone to hell ( John 16:9).

This verse clearly speaks of the evil being resurrected and damned. There is a hell and lake of fire to which the ungodly will be damned (Revelation 19:20; 20:10, 14-15; and 21:8). Those who don’t believe in hell and eternal judgment don’t believe the Word.

BTW..In the original Greek - there is no word for deeds in John 5:28-29. It literally says those who have done evil and those who did good.

John 5:28-29 (NASB)
[SUP]28 [/SUP] "Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice,

[SUP]29 [/SUP] and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.

Our having faith in Jesus is the righteousness God desires.

****Those practicing righteousness are the "saved"-----those practicing wickedness are the "unsaved"...

JOHN 5:28-30,
the scriptures hinge on the meaning of 'damnation' - we know of at least two-opposing views...

My step father was a very “righteous” man he was orthodox, but sadly he never accepted Y-shua before he died of pancreatic cancer. Charly is in hell. My grandfather on the other hand truly a scum-bag of a human, a drunk who raped his own daughters for whatever reason G-d allowed him to live until he was 93 years old, he got saved in his 90’s accepted Y-shua before he died. Now Kendell is in heaven.

Y-shua gave this parable about a man who owned a vineyard. Some showed up in the morning and worked all day, some in the afternoon, some just right before quitting time but all got the same pay those that showed up. Even the most wicked of man will get the same pay if they show up late and accept Y-shua. Y-shua also said why do you call me Lord, I do not know you. My step dad could have been one of those that jot the reward just like the worker that showed up early and had a good life, unlike my grandfather who did get the reward late but had a terrible life, and destroyed others’ lives too but Charly heard “I do not know you” because his righteousness was of filthy rags, because the standard is perfection and the same Law he tried to keep (and I should add did a good job) condemned him.

so is the latter part of the same chapter.

1 After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

Jesus Is Equal with God
18 This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

9 You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me,40 yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.41 I do not receive glory from people.42 But I know that you do not have the love of God within you.43 I have come in my Father's name, and you do not receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him.44 How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, on whom you have set your hope.46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me.47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?"

i am a gentile. who has the correct date to when a gentile was saved. i like the latter part of this chapter, and give meaning to who he is talking to. etc

The righteousness of Christ has been applied to me by faith and the application of the blood......it seems the way of life is indicated....

A lost man's deeds are marred by sin and considered evil.....Jesus said...If you all being evil know how to give good gifts unto your children....

A saved man's works are wrought in Christ and the evil works will be burnt away by fire and yet the man will still be saved......

The scripture quoted does not equate to a works based salvation.....and or adherence to the law salvation......

John 5:27-28
28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

This is before the crucifixion and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. I wonder if He is speaking of those who are already in the grave? All the OT people before Christ...

John 5:45-47
45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.
46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me; for he wrote of me.
47 But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?
