I thought this might be interesting to some. I have to be honest with everybody, there are some here I was quite sure was in scripture and was surprised to find out that is wasn't!! Scripture tells us to impress God's words on our heart and our soul. As I have said a thousand times, brothers and sisters, study God's Word diligently. Memorize it. Obey it. When we get away from what God has commanded us to do, things get distorted, miss-placed, and miss-used; often miss-quoting scripture and quoting something that is not in Scripture. I'm sorry, I've been guilty before my friends!

1. God helps those who help themselves: Nope. This is not a direct quote in the Bible. The earliest recording of this saying is actually from a fable called, "Hercules and the waggoner." Consider salvation. We can do nothing to help, salvation comes through Christ alone.
2. Cleanliness is next to Godliness: This phrase in not in the Bible. It's origin is through an ancient Babylonian text. Jesus wants us to focus more on the sin in our hearts rather than the dirt on our hands(Matthew 7:18-23).
3. Hate the sin, love the sinner: Nope. This is actually a loose quote from Gandhi.
4. Money is the root of all evil: Actually its "the love" of money that is the root of all evil(1 Timothy 6:10). Money is neither good nor bad and being wealthy is not a sin. The desire to accumulate wealth above God is the sin.

Ok, fun facts is over. Everyone have a Blessed day!

Usually people who quote those, and others, as scripture just assume they are so because they sound religious in nature.

Though the problem i see in your comment on #1 is that you only applied it to salvation. It's not usually a reference to salvation to begin with.
But there is some truth to it. Another misconception of God is that He's waiting to zap us and change us, not true. Often God wants us to struggle to learn things. If we want patience,God doesn't just make us patience, He grants us opportunities to put patience into practice. By doing so we learn to develop patience. The same applies in many areas of our spiritual growth. So, in a manner, the statement holds some truth.
If you're in a bad situation, don't pray and wait on God to deliver you, take action. Make plans. Move forward. God may, for reasons known only to Him, deliver you. But you can't sit around waiting.

#3 is also truth. Even though the term isn't in scripture, the principal is.

Your absolutely correct, some of these sayings are truth in principal, just not a direct quote from scripture. I had always thought the first one was a direct quote from the Bible, only to learn I couldn't find it! lol Great insight!
