I think we often do not understand what scripture means by the word transcribed as heart.

It wasn’t until the first century that it was discovered that mental activity was a function of the brain and not the heart as it was believed to be. It took a long time for this information to reach the common man.

We don’t think of the heart as including our thoughts, but the word heart in scripture includes thoughts.

As the sermon on the mount points out, the Lord wants us to control our thoughts as well as our hearts. This makes the instructions we have in Phil 4:8 about what things we are to let in our minds very important. Even secular doctors agree that a mind that accepts hate thoughts that cause stress brings what scripture calls curses.

Heart in the bible can mean lots of things, it can mean physical heart, it can be morals and ideals, it can be emotions and feelings, it can be what the flesh wants, most importantly there is what i call the spiritual heart, where the person has certain spiritual desires. We have to look at the context and meanings of the word heart when referring to something, and look at what it means in the verse.
