  • “The joy of our heart is ceased; our dance is turned into mourning.” (Lamentations 5.15).

At first, this looks like something bad. But what was Israel enjoying in? The sin in Israel was blatant:

  • “The crown is fallen from our head: woe unto us, that we have sinned! For this our heart is faint; for these things our eyes are dim.” (Lamentations 5.16-17).

When this takes place, the aftermath is inevitable:

  • The joy of the heart ceases. Because of the sin, God’s hand is heavy upon us. This smart us and make our mood turns into drought of Summer (Psalms 32.3,4);
  • The dance turns into mourning. After all, because of the sin, nobody is able to see a prodigal son to be rescued and revived (Lc 15.24,25,32);
  • The crown falls from the head. The serfdom is flagrant, inasmuch as the prudent servant overpowers this person that, because of the sin, don’t do anything but abashing (Prov 17.2);
  • The heart gets faint. We see this at the time of Joshua, when the heart of the people melted and became like water because of the sin of Achan (Joshua 7.5,11);
  • The eyes get dim. They become faint (Job 11.20) and incapable of looking toward the heaven (Psalms 40.12).

What about us? What does it make your heart elated? We would be better off if we stay in the house of mourning (Ecc 7.2) rather than enjoy in something that Jesus regards as unpleasant:

  • “All of you which rejoice in a thing of nothing, which say, Have we not taken to us horns by our own strength?” (Amos 6.13).
  • “Make it heard at the palaces of Ashdod, and the palaces in the land of Egypt, and say: Gather yourselves on the mountains of Samaria, and behold the great uproars in its midst, and the oppressed in its midst.” (Amós 3.9).

Analyze with calm the book of Amos (Isaiah and Micah too) and you will see how Israel’s leaders was used to enjoying at the expenses of the populace, and this through things that must have been consecrated to the Creator (Am 4.3-4; Am 5.23; Am 6.1-6; Is 1.11-17; Isa 22.1,2,12-14; Micah 3.12).

So, if you ache for having a relish day, may the happiness of the Jesus be your joy and strength (Nehemiah 8.10), may be His presence the jubilation of your heart (Psalms 37.4; Habakkuk 3.18).
