When you have sex you are married to that person for life. That's what the bible teaches.
All can not except this, but only to whom it has been given.

That's what Jesus said after teaching about marriage. He then talked about people living in celebacy for the kingdom of God's sake.

So I do believe that when you have sex with someone then you are married in God's eyes. Although in today's society, who would really be married? Since only 2 virgins coming together would not already be married to someone. This is a very good reason to abstain from sex before you find the person you plan on spending your life with. There is also God's forgiveness, blessing and healing for those of us who messed up in the past if the person's heart is too get married again(the right way). God did make people differently, some desire a life free from the struggles of marriage and bondage to it, some aren't as smart and long for a helper, no matter how flawed they may be.

hum, this is an interesting topic. I used to be on the wild side but I never did have sex. I am glad that I don't have to worry about that.

I think we are joined in holy matrimony when we stand and make vows to one another before God and invite Him to be a part of the union. Without Him, it's just a piece of paper...a civil, legalistic procedure that even the ungodly can become a part of. Marriage is too precious to be reduced to that. If someone marries someone who is for whatever reason unable to consummate the marriage, would they be any less married in the eyes of God if they've given their hearts and vows to one another before God and man?

If we look at what marriage is supposed to be a foreshadow of...us as the Bride of Christ, perhaps we can see that it's so much more than legal documents and sexual contact.

I chose "after a ceremony" becuase I think the ceremony is your public proclomation for your love for one another as well as your covenant between you two and God. Its like a promise to everyone that you are sealed to each other. I think consummation is like extra glue on that seals, it doesnt make you any more married but it gives you a more physical and emotional connection.

Its kinda like when you buy a new grill. After you pay for it and load it in the truck you know its yours. But its not until you put the meat on the rack, smell the smoke and take that first bite, then you know for sure it's yours.

And you know what, Jesus said if we look at a woman with lust we had sex with her in our hearts so there we go marrying someone again!

I believe a couple is married when God unites them.
I do also think that the legal part is important too, though...like the marriage license and whatnot.
God does tell us to obey the laws of our land....

Thank the Lord that some body know this thats why the bible tell us not to have sex before getting married because right there you and that person become one thats why its take so long getting over the break up!
God bless!

That is always what I thought, and if you sleep with someone else afterwards it adultery and then you can break ties for Jesus condemns adultery.

The ceremony is for the world, you're married in your heart and soul when you speak words of love and commitment for life and if you have sex then you are joined in the body even if you do not give your heart or soul to the union, it is still a union.

However what about those who are raped? Are they married to their rapist until the rapist commits adultery or the crime again?

like in the Bible when Jacob's daughter was raped and her brothers killed the guy and his whole village even though he wanted to marry the girl after the act.

I think people have to have consensual sex for it to be qualified as a marriage.

For me personally and from what I believe...

An engagement is a promise, committing to be committed. It should encourage more responsibility within the couple, and not to be taken lightly. You can't "act like you're married" no matter how long you've been engaged.

Marriage licenses and other legal matters are what gets your marriage recognized by the law, and makes it legal.

The ceremony is something visibly done to further display the union.

Two people are married by God. I believe the vows exist to declare this marriage before God and before each other.

When you sleep together, it's an act that's to be done after marriage. It further shows that you're indeed one flesh, and it's an act of intimacy He calls us to do within the boundary of marriage. It doesn't define it.

You are married when you publicly declare ( and before God) that you are together as a couple. This is what I understood so yeah, as soon as the vow is public and mutual. This I looked into many years ago. So yes the spiritual bond takes place thus sometimes fights foe the partner. But sex before official vows is sin and sex after breaking up is sin. So yeah, lots ofsin going on. It really is the mutual vow in public thus spoken words. Then, I say to the Lord clense me for I have greatly sinned before you and even broke the convenant of my youth.I am sorry and ask forgiveness.

I'm actually more confused than before I read everyones answers, altho I do think that you are married, not when just one thing is done but three, when your vows are said, when God unites you, and when you have sex, I think all three forms a marriage, but that's just my opinion I don't I'm afraid have anything to back it up, and it anyone does find anything in scripture I'd like to know, because I really can't! Help would be appreciated! Thanks a lot!
God bless

I'm not sure about whether sex would automatically be classified as "married" to God, but I do think there is some truth to this. One of my pastors gave a fascinating (and downright scary, when you really thought about it) sermon about the unholy attachments we make to some people in the relationships we choose, and how your spirit basically bonds with demons, and that this is why He reserved sex for marriage--because He wants spirits to bond within a holy, sanctified union, because you are literally given something away and/or having something taken from you, whether you are a man or a woman.

She said, "Why do you think it's called 'getting a piece'"? and that before you're ready to get married, you have to ask God to take you through the process of asking Him to take back all the pieces that you gave away or were stolen from you and make you whole again before you're ready to commit to marriage.

I don't know if this is absolute, but it sure was interesting.
Yep it's called a soul tie and you have to break them in Jesus name. Your pastor was right. I had to break all mine and stopped the mess!

Amen! My last relationship still hurts me but I renounced my sould tie to God from this man and I finally feel free. I am celibate till my wedding day orI will never get married again. Either way I'm good. I am living my life according to God's word and leaving my past....in the past. Praise God for grace!

When two Christians confess openly or publicly that they have given themselves to marriage and has confessed that to the Lord. Why the church ever allowed the government to get involved with marriage I will never know. One should not have to pay the government at any level for the permission or license to be married in the name of the Farther, the Son and the Holy Ghost...that's just me...We ought to obey God rather than man....Cheers
