This isn't so much a request for natural (or unnatural) health ideas to help, since I've tried all I can (and continue to do the ones I simply need to do.) This is a question of where am I headed?

16 years ago, someone took me off an operating table onto a gurney. They pinched a nerve in my back. First thing I noticed pain-wise when I woke up, but within a day the pain traveled to my front. Because of that, I haven't been able to lean over for long, pick up anything heavy without suffering the next day, or do many forms of exercise that require core muscles. It's also bad enough that that was the reason I'm disabled.

Finally, after all these years, the back hurts worse than the front. My pain specialist only offers me shots in the back. I've done that twice in the course of 15 years. The first time, it did nothing to change the original pain, but felt like someone hit me in the back with a 2 X 4. The second time was a year ago. More pain the day of the shot, but no pain in 1/3rd of of my back the day after. And then it came back. He says, at best, it would give me 3 months of relief at $400 copay per shot. Outside of that, "there isn't anything else that can be done."

My primary says I can get all the relief I want as long as I hang upside down. (Rather inconvenient, not to mention, I hate the feeling of that much blood in my head.)

I do live on pain pills already, but I've noticed increasing the amount does nothing to mask the pain, so that's not it either. It's to the point that I'm moving all around to find a comfortable position, knowing there is no comfortable position.

What I'm asking is since it's getting worse and worse, where is this heading? Anyone know? My two thoughts are paralyzed, which honestly might be better, (assuming that means my back stops hurting), or laid up in my bed in agonizing pain.

Lynn, I've had a bad back since my 30's. So that's nearly 20 years of agony for me. I have an appt. with a spine surgeon on October 20th, and I'm going to talk to him about having laser back surgery. I had a 3rd back injection recently, which helps with keeping me somewhat mobile. However, it does nothing for the fact that I cannot sit OR stand for ANY length of time, and I have constant twinges in my back. I also have degenerative disk disease, which I was diagnosed with several years ago, and instead of getting better, it's rapidly getting progressively worse. Right now my quality of life sucks. I can't go out and do social events such as xmas shopping with my sisters, or going to my aunt's 91st bday party.. that involves sitting and standing, neither of which I can do right now. I need my life to be more than a series of yearly injections every few months.

I would strongly suggest talking to your doctor about surgery. It's a better alternative than being paralyzed or in agony for the rest of your life..

Well, I've already given you my suggestion... and told you how much he helped me, and countless others. Is there any point in going through it again?

I had to watch my late wife spend years in agonizing pain due to debilitating arthritis so I have an understanding about pain. She was on pain medications too but in the end it did not help as much due to tolerance issues. She has gone to a better place now and is no longer in pain. Knowing this has eased my pain. I have said a prayer for you for your pain to be alleviated and mobility restored. God Bless You.

Considering I've already done the nutritionist thing, can't afford a chiropractor, and -- together with hubby -- living on $30,000 a year in Philadelphia. No, not really, I guess.

This is sort of like telling Mary and Joseph, "I already told you where the inn is in town. What's your problem?"

Your choice.

For the two of us, with a yearly, family plan, contract... "some" minor insurance coverage on my wife's part... and a discount for attending monthly 1-hour seminars (given by the Dr., free of charge), it costs us $166 a month for the two of us.

But the phone call to the number I gave you is free.

I know the feeling -- I missed two brothers' weddings because I couldn't travel that far.

Are your disc herniated or bulging? Apparently that's a thing. And, although the nerves are rubbing raw, my spine is in tact. I don't know how bad this has to get before surgery, and surgery makes me nervous because of the cost.

One of my brother has scoliosis -- born that way. But they put off surgery until his mid 50's. He's almost 62, has had three surgeries, one didn't work and the other two gave him relief for 1-2 years. (He has to golf in his line of business, and he did say one of the surgeries let him golf again. I know. Golfing seems strange, but he's a financial planner catering to the rich, and the rich do business while walking to the ball.) His plan now is to teach his daughter enough for her to take over the business, and retire next year. At least golf won't be a requirement, although for some strange reason, he loves the game. He also loves the Dallas Cowboys, so there's no accounting on how taste landed in my family. (That's the friendly sarcasm we siblings hit each other with most of the time. lol)

I really hope surgery is an option eventually, but I don't know what doctors consider bad enough to go there.

Lynn, my disks are both herniated and bulging. Read my pain testimony below. It chronicles somewhat what I went through, and the lessons I learned from being in such agony. From November '14- March '15, I had a herniated disk in my back, which landed me in bed nearly 24/7 for all those months. I lost most of the use of my left leg, because sciatica was running down through it. I can't even describe the agony I felt, except to call it hellish. I could not walk far, I couldn't sit at all, nor stand for any amount of time. Between March and now, I've had 3 back injections, the first one didn't work, and I landed in the ER three separate times, then finally in the hospital for 3 days. The second and third injections are working somewhat for now, but as I stated before, my back is getting progressively worse and I'm going to talk to my spine surgeon about having surgery next spring. My back is now starting to herniate again, and it's all I can do, to stand up and walk without going off balance.

When your quality of life degrades to not being able to do things socially, or at home, and you're in constant agonizing pain, THAT'S when doctors decide to "go there." But please don't wait for THEM to suggest surgery, YOU gotta be proactive and suggest it yourself.

There's a freeze coming on Saturday night. I had to bring my tender perennials in -- something guaranteed to cause even sorer back the following couple of days. I cried earlier. (Not much. Crying gives me a headache.) And, the weirdest thing happened about an hour ago -- the pain is back down to how it feels ever morning. Best I've felt in six days. I'm sitting still in my chair!

Thank you for praying.

Thank you, Lord, because I thought you gave me notice this is my thorn!

Hubby has sciatica. I've had it once for just a couple of weeks, so I can't imagine longer. Ain't we a pair. lol
