Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk,
so that by it you may grow up in your salvation." 1 Peter 2:2

They did not use baby bottles in those days...

And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company
lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee,
and the paps which thou hast sucked." Luke 11:27

grace and peace ............
Though the bible doesn't mention baby bottles, there's plenty of thousands of years old relics to be had.

And that women spoke to Jesus about what was commonly accepted....

Indeed like the common baby bottles in those days, some of them look pretty cool.

Oh, I see. And LK 11:28 says that Jesus replied, "Blessed rather [instead] are those who hear the word of God and obey it." As Jesus also said in MT 4:4: "Man does not live by bread alone, but [also] on every word that comes from the mouth of God."

Re 1PT 2:2, I think MT 5:6 is along the same wavelength: Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for [seek] righteousness...

Just curious.

Which translation below sits best with you and your understanding of James 3:17?

But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure;
then peace-loving,
considerate,
submissive,
full of mercy and good fruit,
impartial and sincere.

But the wisdom from above is first of all pure . . .
then peaceable . . .
and reasonable . . .
and teachable.
Filled with mercy . . .
divine good production -
without partiality . . .
and without hypocrisy.
Grace and peace, GeneZ
THIS ONE:
KJV: (in context)

13Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.

14But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.

15This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.

16For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

17But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

18And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

(context is important)

John Gill said:

But the wisdom that is from above
Which has God for its author; which is infused into the soul by the Spirit of God; and leads into the knowledge of things that are above, of heavenly things; and which only is true wisdom and knowledge; and those who are possessed of it are the only true Gnostics; for which, (See Gill on James 3:13) namely, the grace of God: this wisdom

I am also curious, the first translation you quoted is the NIV, but what translation is the second one? No single translation is perfect, so my preference is to use several; of which the following are most important to me - KJV, YLT, ASV, RSV, NRSV and NRSVue. I note that the 2021 NRSVue did not make any changes from the 1989 NRSV.

"But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy." Jas 3:17 NRSVue

Since the NRSV and NRSVue are academic versions, having less theological bias between Calvinists, Arminians, Charismatics, etc., I pay close attention to those. The NRSV and NRSVue also do not translate the OT through the lense of the NT.

What's holding you back? Show us some of them, since they were so common.

For newborn infants. Not for older babies.

It would be fascinating to learn about since breastfeeding was an almost universally common thing for NEW borns.

Here is something I can show you....

The historical evolution of infant feeding includes wet nursing, the feeding bottle, and formula use. Before the invention of bottles and formula, wet nursing was the safest and most common alternative to the natural mother's breastmilk. Society's negative view of wet nursing, combined with improvements of the feeding bottle, the availability of animal's milk, and advances in formula development, gradually led to the substitution of artificial feeding for wet nursing. A History of Infant Feeding

Do you even know what wet nursing was?????
It was using another woman's breasts to feed the baby.
Where was the baby bottle then?

Now show us all of those baby bottles you spoke of.

I'm just saying they did use them back then, you said they didn't but there's plenty of evidence of them. The oldest known is around 7,000 years old.

The second translation was taken from notes from lessons given by my pastor, who was a full-time Greek and Hebrew scholar.
While teaching, he would explain to us why he chose each definition and how the word was understood at the time of writing.

Stop sounding like you are making stuff up.
Do you know how to do that?

Do you know what wet nursing was?

If you can find the movie, 'The Last Emperor' you will see how it was done back them.

Can you say, O yea thanks they did use baby bottles back then. Of course they don't look like today just like cars don't look like they did 100 years ago.

What does wet nursing have to do with ancient baby bottles?

1611 King James Version, still the best translation for all English speaking peoples.

There is a conspiracy to try and eliminate usage of the Greek New Testament manuscripts used for older Bible translations like the KJV.

It's of course good that your pastor who was a Greek and Hebrew scholar, but do you think it wise to listen to or read after only one single scholar? Your pastor may be very good, but do you think he is a better scholar than those translating various versions such as the REB, NRSVue, or even the KJV, etc?

Those are not for newborns...
Not for those just born, who begin sucking for milk.

That is the point you keep missing.

Why would a mother milk herself in bed, and then hand that contraption over to her newborn infant?

1 Peter 2:2
Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk,
so that by it you may grow up in your salvation,

Words matter.

I found my pastor after listening to many....
Many who left something missing, and kept me searching.

Just the same?

In the very beginning, I found a few that were good for me.
But, I matured and stopped being a baby Christian.
Then I needed to find meat of the Word.
That is when it began to be slim pickens.

Most after infancy were teaching to say things the people wanted to hear, rather than what God wants us to hear.

For there will be a time when they will not put up with sound teaching,
but in accordance with their own desires, they will accumulate for
themselves teachers, because they have an insatiable curiosity (itching ears).

That is a good point. Beware the expert who talks as though he/she has papal infallibility.

Yes, especially those of Jesus via the writer of Hebrews 5:12 chastising believers for remaining spiritual infants who still need milk when they ought to have grown and be ready to digest solid food, probably meaning teaching beyond the basic gospel regarding how to be saved.

The one thing that won my respect for my pastor was that he was able to do something I never witnessed to before with
preachers I had been exposed to. He was able to admit he had been wrong about something, and would then introduce
us to the corrections when need be. He studied from other scholars and would read ancient manuscripts in their native
language.. God raised him up. He knew that and gave all credit to God's grace.

So, which modern English translations did he recommend?
