So what is the Church?
The Bible directly identified the Church as the Body of Christ ,
Church the body
Ephesian 5 passage was widely quoted to justify that the Church is the Bride, but upon carefully studying the passage reveals the Church as the Body of Christ.
The very root of encouragement of Ephesian 5:
Eph 5:1Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; :2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savour.
This is the very root of this passage; the church was encouraged be a followers of God and to walk in love.
And then paul addressed the things that should not be done (i.e, Fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness etc)
Then he addressed the wives submission to husband: (Eph 5:21-24)
Eph 5:21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.
Eph 5:22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
Eph 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
Eph 5:24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
Talking to wives the verse was talking about headship
and I think Col 1:18 and 1 Cor 11:3 covers the explanation:
Christ as Head of the Church….(THE BODY)
Col 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
1Cor 11:3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.
The Passage is not about Jesus as the Husband of the Church, But Jesus as the Head of the Church, the Body (eph 5:23, col 1:18, 1 Cor 11:3)
Paul also addressed the husband to Love your wives: (Eph 5:25-30)
Talking to husband:
CHRIST LOVE THE CHURCH (THE BODY)
1Co 12:27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.
Eph 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
Eph 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
Eph 5:27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
Eph 5:28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
Eph 5:29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:
Eph 5:30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
In verse 28, men are encouraged to love their wives as their own bodies.
Then Paul gave further example that He who love his wife love himself, because no man hated his flesh, nut nourished and cherished it like the Lord to the Church.
Christ the Head….the Church is the body:
This is the conclusion of the encouragement to be followers of God and to walk in love...
Eph 5:30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
Eph 5:31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
Eph 5:32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
This is the unity of the Head and the Body…Christ and the Church
To encourage you brothers and sisters;
Eph 4:12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
