I posted some really good christian hip hop in another thread. I agree though most christian music is not very enjoyable. I don't think it has anything to do with it being christian, most of the musicians in that genre just aren't good musicians. They have a hard time balancing the faith aspect of their music while also making something that sounds good.

I like this thread... as far as the original post is concerned. Mutemath and evaenscence...

As far as they are concerned they all had members that were in christian bands prior. The founding members of mutemath were in an all christian band call earthsuit. Evanescence, the drummer rocky is a very good friend of mine and one of the original members or living sacrifice and soul embrace. Both christian groups.

They didn't enjoy being christian band's i can assure you. Yet marketing is marketing.

I really don't like christian music either. I think all labels should be secular/indie, and bands can do whatever they want, and sing about what they feel lead to sing about.

While I agree there is a difference in message between CCM and regular pop music, I was focusing in more on things like Christian hardcore and Christian black metal.

Structurally and technically there is ZERO difference between modern Christian and secular music (of ANY genre or style). A Christian hardcore song sounds exactly like a secular Christian song. The only difference are the lyrics that no one can understand anyway.

Now my question for you is this- if they sound exactly the same in pretty much every way, then why is there a Christian music industry at all? Why can't these artists compete in the mainstream with everyone else? Sure there are fluke examples here and there, but for the most part Christian artists stay inside the Christian music bubble. Why?

I think the christian hardcore/punk scene is the most on fire group of christian musicians, for sure! as a hardcore group, you don't have the funding like you do with big labeled ccm bands. they do it for the pure passion for the music and the message of which they speak of.

For today, and sleeping giant especially...my hats go off to them.

I would def say the hardcore christian music scene is the closest you can get to "christian music."
 
I really think that people don't give Christian music enough credit. I have listened to a lot of bands...and yes there are some that don't belong out there. But there are MANY good Christian bands out there. Besides, how many secular bands have you seen do worship sessions and totally ROCK it?
 
I worked in christian music girly girl. I give it the credit it's due. That's not much.

I will never forget mark from audio adrenaline, we were doing an interview with him for a movie we were putting together, and he said his label required them to say jesus a certian ammount of times for them to be able to play a song on the radio. They did it cause they had to, welcome to christian music. They call them JPM's in the music business..

I have never heard any Christian groups that I liked, they generally are untalented and just make a lot of noise...

If I want to listen to decent music I listen to secular music...

There is a lot of talented christian musicians out there. They just aren't marketed as christian musicians.

I am talking about Christian groups who play Christian music (as that is what the thread is referring to), not Christian musicians who are not marketed as Christians musicians...

Well actually if you read through, this thread covers a lot of different things.

I was refering to christian bands as well. Just not marketed as christian bands.
 
i think that rain is right though on that if the music sounds the same as secular music that we may deem bad, then what really seperates that music from christian music that relies on that similar playing style?

we should discern both lyrics and musical content, because musical content itself speaks its own tongue, it communicates messages we may not understand at first but they get absorbed either way, thats why many non-christian songs and such are simply music, devoid of praise and subtly suggesting one thing.

people understand that music speaks out, but how much do you realize about how it speaks out? I could sing about Jesus and love with the harshest sounds and some might still consider it christian, although the sound itself plays one of the most important parts. I remember listening to a man who came allegedly from the illuminati and was born again and was speaking out against christian rock because satanic music has its power in the music, whereas christian music has its power in lyrics; however this does not mean all instrumental play is suggestive in negative ways like the following

also television and movies themselves are not worth it, it causes tv coma, drains energy, and robs you of imagination and theres way too much secular stuff that is just bad, not worth it, and you lose money for cable service, too much hassle, spend your money on good organic food instead!
 
My question is: Can you do better than the Christian bands out there?

Seriously...at least accept the fact that they can sing on key and play guitar pretty decently and that they're out to glorify God and please God, and not you. (That goes for any and all Christian bands.)

AANNND...any Christian band is better than Lady Gaga or Katy Perry or Rebecca Black or Justin Bieber.
 
Ever notice how a lot of ''christian'' music is left so open to translation/interpretation? Especially the hard rock, metal and all of the related genres?

This is because a lot of the songs that are performed by these christian musicians are written by people in the music industry who are NOT Christians....
